Any bands/artists here interested in contributing to a Micky Jones Tribute CD?
Please PM me for more information.
-
Good idea ! ;)
-
I thought there was more discussion about this... maybe it was an exchange of emails... I'm on another computer these days, and haven't heard anything more. I've got started on my contribution. Basic arrangement anyway. I've picked an odd bit to cover, so I feel pretty free to do what ever I want. The original, which I got from Micky, is pretty nifty but not like anything you might have heard before. Makes it much harder to fcc up.

I don't think you've missed anything, Ron - I guess everybody is getting their contribution(s) together.
I've more or less finished the backings to my version of 'CDTM' give or take a few howling wolves and windy weather, although I'm having a bit of problem with rain. I have auditioned two rain storms so far. The first lot sounded like hiss. The second lot were a bit better, but sounded like crackling. It's not easy. And rain can be so temperamental - push it to far and it'll throw an artistic strop and the barometric pressure will drop by 5 newtons (36km).
There's also a bonus mashup of 'Night In Dad's Bag' but this will probably have to be left off as it might be a bit too naughty. Heh Heh.
-
..and windy weather, although I'm having a bit of problem with rain..
Yeah, we have problems like that up here too..
-
In short, my rain is just not wet enough.
-
The old sound effects trick was to drop rice grains onto a balloon to simulate the sound of rain. I suppose if you want heavy rain you could try pees...
-
I suppose if you want heavy rain you could try pees...
Yes, Dave. A good idea! I've run a cable to the toilet and attached an SM58, as is usual in the circumstances.

Oho! (side note: I had to log in to open that link - I don't think I've had to do that before - Jules, am I wrong or simply mistaken?)
Anyway - the guitar solo will be done by Slash.

New security feature.
Often mistaken, usually wrong. That's what passes for normality in my kennel.

...and features a cover version of Creedence's 'Up Around The Bend'.
That's what passes for normality in my kennel.
That's a bit rough.

If there are any bands/artists here who maybe didn't see the original message about the Micky tribute CD there's still time to get involved. Please PM me for more details. The date for submission of finished tracks has now been set at 22 Jan. 2011.
If anyone would like to have a go at some artwork for the CD then please contact me.
Also looking for a suitable title - any suggestions?

Titles:
Parting Gift
Music For Methyr's Magician
Hey Micky
Welsh Boy
Lifting the Little Finger

In short, my rain is just not wet enough.
Panic over. The Rain now sounds very wet.
We now turn our attention to the wind - it's just not draughty enough. Difficult to achieve on tape (or whatever it is these days....)

Shurly you are not asking contributers to this board for suggestions about making wind noises...
And don't call me Shurly... RIP.
-
Don't know about any of the other mugs involved, but my track is done, 'cept for the mix. Once again, we didn't play fair. Brought in a ringer to do the solos. Deniz Tek was chuffed to be asked. After watching God Walks Past.... he had a bit more understanding and respect for the boys. And doing a song none of you have ever heard gives us an advantage ;)
Who do I send this to? Should have it wrapped up in a couple of days. Got sidetracked working on the new Brain album. Is there really 18 songs in the works? That's what the list sez. Some of you guys had better buy copies of the last one, so we can do the deluxe vinyl+CD package I have in mind... haha
-
Also looking for a suitable title - any suggestions?
Yes - how about Lord Pritchard? Admiral Pritchard? Either would be good.
....and doing a song none of you have ever heard gives us an advantage ;)
Wow! We look forward to hearing that, Ron.
-
...cheers, i went into my studio space last night with my engineer/co producer Alfredo(for this track anyhow) to start recording a version of Kerosene for the cd.we laid down some bass, guitar, vocals and drums.it looks like it's gonna work.we're going in tonight to put piano, guitar on again, and whatever else.Alfredo's gonna take it home and tweak it;we hope to mix it monday, and send it over tues.-peace-Davey

Does that mean you are playing a 'ringer' ? That's cheating ;D
-
My wolves sound like dogs slowed down.
Alfredo's gonna take it home and tweak it
Wasn't that Donna Summer?
-
wye aye im gwan do a song for Iowerths album like. After all his great great grandfathers sisters brothers wifes husband Rev R.C. Pritchard is doing the wedding service in upper llanoleum village hall an that.
The song is call doon the toon.
Off to give pardew some kirk.

Does that mean you are playing a 'ringer' ? That's cheating ;D -Rob W.
[/quote] i don't know exactly what you mean by that."tweak" in this context means adjusting the levels or other things that engineers and producers do, like removing and adding things, fading things in and out, changing the way an instrument sounds, picking what sounds to use et al .but everything is played or sang by me on this track, in tribute to Micky :)...actually we are gonna "tweak" i.e. "mix" the music together tonight after we are done over dubbing.Alfredo will not be "tweaking" alone.with modern technology if you play a bad note you can erase it.that would be a form of "tweaking" in this situation for example.anyhow we are working on the interlude section right now;Alfredo stepped out.our friend Cristin is coming over to hang,it's gonna snow big tomorrow.we have hours in front of us to finish this.it'll be ready to send over tomorrow if not sooner.i've figured out some chord changes for the first middle interlude.we gotta do some percussion, pick from multiple takes of the same instruments, maybe put down some more keys, and mix it then we'll be done.we are having a great evening and it's getting better...i hope will you like the finished result-cheers-Davey
-
Sorry, davey. It got lost in translation. Just a poor play on the word "tweak". You know, 'tweak' to 'Tweke'. So your band is playing with Tweke.....
And a 'ringer' is where let's say an amateur band enters a competition, and within the band they sneak in a professional. That professional is called a 'ringer'.
So, Tweke is a ringer, and that is cheating.
Simple.......ish
:o
-
Tweke is a ringer....
Wasn't that by Elkie Brooks?

Did I ever tell you and others of ourse, that I used to go to her folks' shop on a Sunday morning for bagels and stuff?
Oh, I believe I did.... 8)

A final call for contributions to the tribute album - the closing date is next Saturday (22nd).
There are a wide ranging variety of tracks already submitted, and the album is shaping up to be a fine tribute to Micky.
I hear on the grapevine that Nick Nation is still working on his contribution, but is running out of tracks for his epic production - how many is it up to now Nick? Don't forget 'Sgt. Pepper' was recorded on 4-track and that sounded half decent...
-

It was 70, Mr P - but I've now got that down to 67. Obviously it is likely to increase....perhaps a sweepstake could be arranged?
Don't forget 'Sgt. Pepper' was recorded on 4-track and that sounded half decent...
...so if they'd done it on 8-track it would have been decent.
-
...so if they'd done it on 8-track it would have been decent.
..surely if it is decent, it must be a downhill-track..
..if it was done on a caterpillar-track it would sound moth-eared..
-

Gosh yes. I did try off-the-beaten-track, but I got hopelessly lost.
-
I've now got that down to 67.
Or the equivalent of 134 half-tracks, which would certainly make a mess of yer lawn.
-
...a mess of yer lawn.
That's easy! Elvis!
Woo Woo!
Annnnyway...I've decided to remove some instruments, I was getting befuddled. I needed to back track.

67 tracks? yer joking, right? I think the most we've ever needed was about 30... wouldn't want to mix all those bits... Got Ric "the one take fcc'r" banging out drums as we speak. Might get drums on eleven songs this weekend. Planned on 10, but we are way ahead of schedule. Drums on 8 tracks, and two of those are experimental mics, just to see if it adds anything...

First Yorkshireman:
Four tracks - we used to dream of having four tracks. In my day it t'were direct to mono, and that were it.
Second Yorkshireman:
Mono - we used to dream of recording t'mono. We recorded to an acetate disc, and if you made a cock-up you had to scrap t'disc, and you got a clip round t'ear from the producer.
Third Yorkshireman:
Acetate - we used to dream of recording t'acetate. We only had wax cylinder, and that were second hand, we used to have to smooth over t'grooves with a candle.
Fourth Yorkshireman:
Wax cylinder - we used to dream of recording on t'wax cylinder. First recordings we made were grooves in t'plate while t'potter kept plate spinning.
All:
And you try and tell the young home recordists of today that ..... they won't believe you....
-
I don't believe you.
-
I don't believe you.
Understandable Mr Joules, after all I usually talk bolleaux.
67 tracks? yer joking, right?
In fact....no, Ron - it really is that many. At the moment. I did think about writing them down, but all that would prove was that I can write. Besides, most of you couldn't give a flying feck. Anyway, it's now down to 64 tracks thanks to a bit of pre-mixing - although many of these are stereo, so does that count as two? In which case it would be 92. Plus my 5 FX returns are routed individually back to the desk rather squished into an aux return - so that would make it 97. If it's good enough for Phil Spector, it's good enough for me.
We only had wax cylinder, and that were second hand, we used to have to smooth over t'grooves with a candle.
Ahh! Voicepants.
-
Ok Pop Pickers.....brace yourselves.
The countdown begins. My version of 'Call Down The Moon' has now safely arrived at Pritchard Towers. It's not a mash up or anything, it's exactly like the original. Cough.
To make sure you hear just how much like the original it is, as well as other MJ related ditties, I suggest you get a copy of Mr P's fabulous Micky Jones Tribute CD in due course.
...and if you think this is shameless plug, you ought to see the one in my bathroom.

The CD is now mastered and the artwork complete, so I will be sending off the package to the duplicators tomorrow. The anticipated release date is 10 March, which will be one year on from Micky's passing.
The method of distribution will be as per 'Crintabulated' , i.e. the CD is not a commercial release, and is free to friends, ideally with a donation to Micky's nominated causes.
The tracks are:
01. THE HEADSTONE POETS - Back Together Again (7:02)
02. ROSTOCK - Long Lost Friend (4:53)
03. DAVID SCOTT - Kerosene (7:24)
04. DONOVAN'S BRAIN - Violin Thing (4:30)
05. ELIGH TOADD - Angel Easy (5:25)
06. THE HEADSTONE POETS - C'mon (mon) (9:31)
07. THE QUAFFING LLAMAS - The Acidtone Variations (parts 1- 3) (8:20)
08. NICK NATION & FRIENDS - Call Down The Moon (5:41)
I'll be posting a link to a dedicated web page shortly.
-
it's long enough...
-
I don't recall Micky doing "A Violin Thing". Eagerly awaited, Ron..
-
I'm disappointed you didn't ask me, the author of two chart-bothering CD titles, to name this one. Clearly the title should have been perverse, and quoting from Deke Leonard is as perverse as it gets.
'From his 'book', Rhinos Winos and Lunatics, I give you (too late obviously) 'A Little Guitarist Is a Dangerous Thing'
Ah well
-

Obscure home demo. Figured it was a safe plan.... nothing to compare it too.
-
The tribute album website is now up and running at: http://sites.google.com/site/mickyjonestributealbum, where you can get details about the album and listen to a preview. I'm expecting the CDs to be delivered tomorrow.
I'm really pleased with the way this project has turned out - you can tell that all the contributors have Micky very close to their hearts, and this comes over in the performances. All in all a fine tribute.
-
Mines ordered, thanks for all your efforts IP..
-
As is mine. Looking forward to it 8)
-
Since we are announcing it, so is mine. :)

Job done.

Many thanks for the requests received so far for the CD. The first batch were posted this morning. Obviously I'm eager to hear what everyone makes of it.
There have been 100+ hits on the website so far, so with luck I'll be making quite a few more trips to the Post Office over the coming weeks.
-
Obviously I'm eager to hear what everyone makes of it.
CDs arrived today. Delighted with the whole thing. Blub, sniffle.
Top marks Mr Pritchard, for getting up. Can we shoot the dog at the end?
-
Thank you IP. Another Man type person I'm indebted to. Wish I wouldn't have purchased that Record Collector mag all those years ago. Would have saved me over the years, a fortune in dosh, time, and general all round effort.
On the other hand, maybe it was the best thing I ever did. ;D ;D
Just listening to Davey's bit as I type this. Nope, now onto the violin thingy wotsit doodah.
-
A big Thank You to all involved in the making and producing of the Micky Jones Tribute Album, been listening to it this evening. I impressed at how talented fellow forum members are.

Dear Iowerth,
I'm having trouble with PayPal. Is it possible I could simply pop a 'note' in an envelope?
If so could you send me address to: mark.oakley@merlinentertainments.biz.
Cheers,
Oakers.

"Alls well" could have been so much better, So I would like to see the final concerts at the roundhouse released in Full....
...yeah, and the remaining footage from the filming.
I've only just noticed that the film doesn't include any of the songs on AWTEW - is this a coincidence or was it deliberate?
-
This just received from Vicky at Esoteric:
"It is just over 12 months since Micky Jones, mainstay of Man, passed away. The Manband Forum have organised a free tribute album to Micky. You can join the forum at http://www.manband-archive.com/forum ".
-
Brilliant.....they got my message then....nice to see there is still a good relationship between MAN and Esoteric.
-
Many thanks to Martin and all who participated and distributed this CD. Mine arrived yesterday
Once again Thankyou
Pete (Germany)
-
Many thanks to Martin..
I nearly fell of my seat when I read that. I thought Martin Ace was trying to do something then, until I realised it was Martin Mycock.. :-X

I'll put in in the bag for the next one and see what happens.
I was surprised to see that our track was the shortest one on the record.
-
played Nick's CDTM and our own Violin Thingy on my show today. Quite like that version of CDTM. Some nice ideas. I'll have my show posted by tomorrow. Connection is funky today... maybe due to yet another big snow storm

Thought you might choose that one!! ::)

Hmmm....perhaps a bit like the second part of my version of 'Call Down The Moon' which can be heard on my site here: http://www.nicknation.co.uk/MJones.html (http://www.nicknation.co.uk/MJones.html)
It comes from the Micky Jones Tribute Album which is still available here: https://sites.google.com/site/mickyjonestributealbum/ (https://sites.google.com/site/mickyjonestributealbum/) with proceeds to good causes!
