Title: Things That Shouldn't Annoy You - But Nevertheless Do
Post by: Nick Nation on November 04, 2010, 07:27:43 PM
Something that shouldn't annoy me but nevertheless does is when someone walks down the street holding their mobile phone in an over - demonstrative manner. Not actually using it, just handling it in a manner last seen when Captain Kirk was about to use his communicator. And all this despite having a bag and pockets. Next.

Groups of 2 or three people who amble down corridors and walk in the middle.  FFS get in the slow lane and let me past.

drivers in the middle lane of the m'way when the nearside is empty.
drivers who stay out of the bus lane during the hours when the bus lane is open to all. Why don't they use those camera cars to nab them?
drivers who don't say thanks when you leave a gap for them to get through

I think there's a pattern emerging here......

Drivers Who DON'T INDICATE AT ROUNDABOUTS.

It's alright I know which exit you are going to take.

In fact Drivers who have no idea how to use the lanes on a roundabout!! I really don't mind if you carve me up!!

Hmm, interesting suggestions....although in most cases mentioned so far I think these are things where feeling annoyed could be considered a reasonable response. What I'm looking for are things that shouln't be annoying.

In this connection I would like to add: Men wearing short trousers and and thinking it's alright. Shudder!

I thought that as I was typing, but I was on such a roll I thought 'bugger it'

I wear shorts most of the time. What's wrong with it?    Mind you, I s'pose you've got to have the legs for them, so answered it meself I think  ::)

...exactly, Rob. Nothing wrong with it at all. Practical and comfortable.

Wince, nevertheless.

How about: it's November and there's some people walking around wearing sunglasses. Not for eye protection purposes, but permanently raised in case of sudden super nova and posing value. Maybe it annoys me because I wish I'd thought of it first. Gnash.

Nick,

Think my list above fits this criteria quite well.
I shouldn't be annoyed that others can find pleasure in listening to the current Man farce..
I shouldn't be annoyed that tribute bands can make a living (and damn good one) sponging of off the creativity of others..

MD - As I'm sure you know, there's more to it than the music.

I'm biting, but only a little bit.

Tucky, it's an interesting one abut tribute bands. We've had this discussion before.  On the one hand,  are they taking the living away from young bands trying to get onto the gig circuit? On the other hand, are they keeping venues open enabling young bands to get on the gig circuit?   etc etc etc................

And there are 2 well known and highly accomplished musicians we know and love, doing their covers bit, and hopefully earning a good living doing it.....

which reminds me, surely somebody here knows whether Bob R is in Yorkshire tomorrow night    :)

So, does Mrs H know you've been offering for years, whatever it is you've been offering.

I think she needs to be told. In fact I'll tell her next time I'm at the Renfrew Ferry.

Mind you, I'll never find the b*gg*r, so not much for you to worry about there     ;D

Yes Pete, on re-reading I take yout point. It just goes to show what italics can do. Leaning forward in an angular fashion, conveying that all-important note of urgency combined with a sense of efficiency bordering on the streamlined thereby putting a different emphasis on whatever it was that was orginally being said. Well hurrah!

Today - b*stards who think they can go past you when queueing at a petrol station.

Recently - the distressing trend on the radio for practically every presenter to start a sentence with "Listen!".
Drives me mad, it is so rude.

Spooky, not that long ago, I was saying similar about how MP's have recently begun their sentences with "Look".

At least on the radio, technically they are correct!

PS... Is nobody going to answer my question aout Bob R on Barnsley tomorrow night? Thought I'd tag it on here. Don't want to answer my own post. Makes out I've no mates and have to talk to myself    ::)   ;D   :o

...when somebody screws up a saying who is not "hip" and it gets into the general pantheon and you're hearing it on newscasts, in articles, reading it in books.here's two examples.when i grew up ,when you made a mistake you said(if you were hip) "my bag" not "my bad" as people do today. as in "what's your bag?" "my bag is music"...can't stand it when i hear "my bad". and this second one...i need to take a deep breath...ok, it's "deep SEEDED" as in a seed deep within the ground that you can't get to and change what's growing out of it.not "deep seated"  ffs(thanks for that saying) what the hell is a deep seat??? "i'm sorry sir,it was a really deep seated problem. i mean that seat was REALLY deep".what, it was meaningful? i mean we even have the saying "deeply rooted problem". that's where it comes from.how am i to trust a news article that can't get that straight.i'm seeing "deep seated" all over the place...maybe i'm wrong here...but i don't think so...i guess this stuff shouldn't bother me, oh but how it does...cheers-Davey

When people refer to the end of work time as "the end of play".

Sort of implies I'm enjoying myself.

In fact most sporting terms used in a non sporting setting tend to wind me up, for no apparent reason.

Oh dear... whenever there's a meeting at work, or going somewhere socially, I never ask 'when does it start'  or similar. I always ask "when does it kick off". That's another smite I presume.

And thinking about it, still with Tel, I get annoyed by, and probably shouldn't be, when people want to know what job you do, they ask 'what game are you in?'. Always remember a particularly nasty bloke asking me that. I said "I'm not in a game, I take it seriously"

Sorry, but I think you are wrong here Davey. For me, the phrase has always been deep seated. Dictionary.com says it dates from 1741

People from Ontario would pronounce seated as seeded.

No chance of deep seeded becoming engrained then?

Mark and the rest of the people, i refer you to the same link. 1. it's says originated 1740 something...and that's all the detail we get? dodgy i.e. where's the back story"well two guys were hanging around and one guy fell into a really deep seat.the other man ran around the town yelling 'we have a really deep seated problem here people!'and the rest is history" ?...2. it says in the definition: similar to deeply rooted(as in a seed). tell me when was the last time a "seat" had a "root"? i mean a seed IS the root really...c'mon people wake up here.you've been had... 3. in yahoo answers on the left of the link(if you scroll down) i am corroborated. somebody's been pronouncing it wrong for years and there's been a latter day wiki coverup to save face.it's good to know that this didn't happen in my lifetime.that's what really bothered me...let me just have a little more fun here:explain the origin and meaning to me please( listing a year doesn't cut the mustard).i'm on to something here.it's gonna crack me up hearing your explanations(or it's going to put some sense into me;i'll take either)...i'll try: "It's a deeply-seated problem" is it deep within someone's pants? is that why it's so serious? "it's deep within the seat i mean this problem is really lodged really far down there i can't get to it from here.i need a special tool please help" if the situation was "shallow seated" would that be good, or the opposite extreme? "medium seated"? even still it depends on the size of the sitter...i mean really:"i'm sorry sir,but because of the deepness of this seat over here, our WHOLE SITUATION is in jeopardy"...you can't trust everything you read on the web...but again i'm not taking anyone to task here,if indeed this has been going on since the mid 1700's...one last question. which of these three sayings doesn't make sense? "deeply rooted" "deep seeded" "deep seated"BINGO! the first two are obviously connected.the third is "way off the Mark"...love and peace-Davey

...uh hi...i just want to say i looked up the meaning of seat.it could mean base i.e. "base of the problem" or something like that...i'm sorry people, i got a little too hyped up.there could feasably be independant origins of these sayings etc. i ran deep seeded/seated and my bag/bad by my handball partner yesterday. he agreed on deep seeded 'cause he said it was more natural.but he took me to task on "my bag".he said it was my bad all the way.i still don't see how there could be A bad,or how you could have one. but "my bad" does seem to have won in the pantheon by a long shot.no one says my bag anymore(if they ever did on a large scale). i feel it should be "my bad apple" or something like that ...in other news i'm happy to report that my fellow guitar playing band mate was regaled with the roundhouse movie yesterday evening(after falling asleep at the end the last time he was over), and he is now solidly a fan.Deke reminded him of a 70's  tv newscaster.i also wore my purple Micky shirt out last night to where some friends were bartending, dj spinning ,and having a birthday, and for one of the first times in my life in a bar situation, i got lucky...people liked the shirt too...there will be another band listening session later this afternoon/evening at our newly christened bachelor pad, where the regaling will continue...-peace everybody-Davey...back to you Bob...

My bad is believed to have originated in the 1600s having first surfaced in print in Shakespeare's 12th sonnet:

"So you o'er-green, my bad, my good allow?"

However the current widespread worldwide use seems to date from 1995 when Alicia Silverstone's character used the phrase 'My bad' several times in her movie “Clueless”.

Didn't see the fillum myself ... but knowing Hollywood of the 1990s it was probably more like Alicia Silverstone doing it in the bedroom with some sort of electrical appliance!

What about when there's just over 3 hours left on your birthday, and there's no sign of a Happy Birthday on the Message Board?

Not that it's mine or anything, but rather than anybody wish me happy birthday, a few karma points would be appreciated, +'s of course   ;)

..see. If you were on face book, we'd all know when your birthday is. You'd get a "Peace, happy born day" from Davey, greetings from Scotland x3, best wishes from Norway, then there's Tony, Gina and Nick, and Pete and Andy mids, oh, and me.. (but not mh for some reason, he's a twit..) Even Deke's here..

When is your birthday anyway..?

I blummin' well drive, have the hassle of parking in the centre of M/cr on a Saturday night, go to a swanky-ish Italian restaurant, I don't eat cheese, and I end up paying the whole bill and they took me out !!!  mind you, worse than that, where the  *#@!/* eck did those extra smites come from? ANY GENERALISATION !

e.g."The GREAT British public"- actually,a very mixed bunch.

e.g. "All nurses, doctors, teachers are wonderful "- No! SOME are, some are useless, most are average.

e.g."Hard working families*- a much over-used generalisation beloved by politicians.

e.g. Nationalism. For instance,Welsh people (of which I am one),who say they" hate" the ENGLISH.There are "good" English people ,there are not so "good"English.. just like there are "good" Welsh and not so good Welsh. ERGO-I probably have more in common with an English Manfan than a
Welsh Bonnie Tyler fan......if you see what I mean!

Talked about this in work and it reminded me of certain advertising staples that really get my goat:

Toothpaste ads where there is patently no toothpaste on the brush. You're advertising toothpaste ffs!

"Healthy" yoghurt drinks like Benecol and Yakult where there is patently nothing in the bottle!!

Any chocolate bar where they hold it right at the very end in an attempt to make it look bigger than it actually is!!!

I'm off for a lie down...

"Well I woke up this morning
Got those split infinitive bloo ooz,,,,,"

Long before he sold out to the BBC and went 'all mobile phone', Jasper Carrott was a brilliant folk singer/comedian. He did his own impersonisation of a Blues song:-

"Well I woke up this afternoooon
Looked out my window, seen your face.
Well I woke up this afternoooon
Looked out my window, seen your face.
Well all the time I knew you,
I never knew, no I never knew, I never ever knew,
You were a window cleaner..........."

Trust me, it was funny at the time. Think you had to be there   :)

Either way, still remaining one of the greatest, if not the greatest thing I've ever seen in my whole life, is Jim Clark, the greatest of them all, hurtling a Cortina (Mk 1 though) around Oulton Park at a speed and at angles you wouldn't think possible.

Jeez, I used to have a teal blue (none of your powder rubbish) Moggy Marina all those years ago. ETU 492K. Shifted a bit. Recall driving through the night back from the hills of Mid Wales without use of the clutch. Knackered slave cylinder. Changed gear by pumping the clutch pedal. Also recall one of the rear springs going, fuel pipe breaking. Oh and once I'd turned the ignition on, I could pull the key out of the lock. Had great fun with young girls out in the middle of nowhere saying we were stuck. Well, just the one girl actually, but hey ho.

Good luck tomorrow Rover. I'd usually accept one point because I like you, but we're in desperate need, so hope we get the 3pts, but I fear a 1-2 scoreline in favour of you lot.

I wonder how many digits the smite counter has - when it gets past 999 does it go to 1000,  or back to zero? - We'll find out shortly I guess

I would just like to say that I now feel my post re '400' looks a bit ambiguous -  hate spelling that word - and 'twas I what gave the 400th applaud, rather than making an exhortation to smite.

Jehovah's bloody witnesses.

Ah yes, Jehovah's Witlesses.

I think they must be sponsored by Cadburys, odd seeing as they don't do Easter. Or blood transfusions. Or read the sticker stating that I don't hold discussions on the front door. Twice.

Whilst I'm at it, I see we're all praying for that footballer who had a heart attack recently - I would have thought his remarkable recovery was down to the skill and response of the medical teams and to suggest that it was down to other forces shows a total lack of respect for their incredible work. What would be the implication if he died?

Came back to a boot full of sodding watchtowers!

Is that a Hendrix fanzine?

Probably the most painful thing that I ever had done was a similar injection in the wrist for tendonitus. And that includes major abdominal surgey last year.

Once the anisthetic wears off it hurts like f**k. And I still don't have full movement in my right hand thumb. Not enough to incapacitate but every so often it twinges.

So, I don't care what anybody else says, you have my fullest sympathy Pete.

Ron Davies.  Ahh.  Welsh lad, played for Wales in the 60's / 70's.  So did Wyn Davies who played for Newcastle during the same period.  Not related, but many thought they were.

Interesting, but plausible, take from Rover.

And Chelsea are through to the Champ League final.  What happened to Messi tonight?

A few lines from a Daily Mail article.

Too spooky to contemplate how he confirmed it worked!

No wonder it’s notoriously difficult to find. A doctor claims to have proved the G-spot really does exist – but says it measures a meagre 8.1mm by 3.6mm by 1.5mm.
The American gynaecologist discovered the elusive erogenous zone during a post-mortem examination.

Airlines, ferry operators, and other charlatans in the travel business who make a very loud noise about the 'value' of their 'one way' tickets. Yeah right. Very f*****g handy. 3/6 to go out, £200 to get home. Who the f**k needs a one way ticket? I don't care if its 2 bob, I want to come home again, and I'd really like to know how much you're going to charge me, you shower of gobshites.

Any Southampton fans out there?
Well on the basis I saw them once in 1967 I suppose yes. Terry Paine, Jimmy Melia, Ron Davis,... now it's gone all hazy.

Rover's prediction: Soton, WHU both lose against a couple of reserve teams.

I was at the 1969 European Fairs Cup Southampton 1 Rosenborg 0 (I think) - Rosenborg are Trondheim's team near where I now live. Seen one football match since I moved to Norway 30 years ago - Rosenborg vs Southampton. Did Southampton get relegated to the 4th division this year?

Martin Chivers I remember and Jimmy Gabriel and Mick Channon!

...and the best memory from the Dell was seeing George Best run rings round the Saints...

If your language skills are up to it, try logging into the airline/ferry company's site in wherever you are going, or if they only have one site, try logging in using the language of wherever you are going.  You can sometimes get a single from say Spain or Greece, for less than the return leg back to the UK, if booked in the UK.

Another trick, if you make regular journeys into London or other major cities on British Rail, is to see what the cost and restrictions are on buying the ticket the other way round. In the early 80's, a London to Bath period return was less than a Bath to London day return, and had no restrictions on when you arrived "back" in London, so people bought one single to London and then bought their returns from London - only worked if you travelled in the 3 months the period return was valid - and no idea if it works now - haven't used a train in years.

Boing Boing!

Rock, could you explain the origins of this 'boing boing' thing to me. It is pretty daft yet mightily impressive when a few thousand people do it. Many moons ago a mate of mine used to sell chocs and drinks off a little tray at the Hawthorns, gingerly making his way along the touchline. He recalled that Jeff Astle once missed a shot so badly that the ball smashed into his tray sending twixes and mars bars everywhere.

A funny old game, ecomomic collapse round the corner whilst Yaya Toure is being paid £220,000 a week.

Not entirely sure meself. Having lived abroad for the past 21 years, I hav'nt been up the Albion during all that time. It's recently been attributed to Albion's tendancy to bounce between divisions, but it predates that. I reckon it started around 1992/1993 ish? Although I'm willing to be corrected by anyone more knowledgable. I'd put it down to the general yampiness of Black Country folk.
My favourite Albion moment was during the 80's when Pete Shilton played for Forest. One Sunday he made the front page of all the tabloids for wrapping his car around a lampost late at night with a lady passenger that was not his wife. When Forest played Albion the following saturday, he kept goal during the first half in front of the Forest fans. When he came out for the 2nd half and approached the Albion end, the chant went up "Does your missus, does your missus, does your missus know you're here? Does your missus know you're here?" He had a smile on his face that said "yeah, yeah, you funny f***s!" Ah! Them was the days...

The boing boing was going strong prior to 92/93. We played WBA in 1990 or thereabouts, their fans looked great in the Manny Rd End doing the boing boing. I recall us lot responding with a "what the f*****g hell is that.
My favourite memory of the Hawthorns is when in the 70's, we played Millwall in the FA Cup (a valued competition then), drew at Gigg, drew at their place, and the replay on neutral ground was at WBA. Only 3k there, but it was all Bury. And the few WBA fans were on our side as well. Bizarrely, can't recall the score. Sure we won, but in those days the result was of minor signficance   arf arf

I was way off with Peters - wiki extract below

"In March 1970, West Ham received a record-breaking £200,000 (£146,000 cash) for Peters from Tottenham Hotspur and Peters duly went to White Hart Lane, with Spurs and England striker Jimmy Greaves (valued at £54,000) going the other way. Peters scored on his Spurs debut against Coventry City."

Who's just banged in the equaliser for me on the smite/applaud front?

Thank you whoever it was.

That's worth a transfer fee of £100k in anybodys money     :)

And talking of WBA, mid 70's we played the then mighty WBA at Gigg in the League Cup.  Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham, Robbo et al, Atkinson as manager I think. Top ish of 1st tier. We were 3rd tier but a good team. Night match, foggy, about 16k on, we won 2-1. Great days.

Agreed. It does mean that certain acts can re-release material ad infinitum - no doubt Mr Page is planning a remastered remixed re-edited version of Led Zep 2 in time for Xmas as we speak. On the other hand, I would want to hear the bonus tracks if it's a band I'm particularly fond of - but perhaps collected together and packaged as such, rather than a way of re flogging stuff we've already got.

I was impressed in the 70's when the BFC DJ of the time played VDGG as our theme tune over the tannoy every match day at 2.30pm. Ok it was Theme One, which was not the same as lemmings or Man -Erg, but it was a pretty good show.

Best footy music was Slade's, I just like the things you do (I think that's a lyric not title) really got you in the mood. And you know the other song I recall getting into match mode, was Gimme Dat Ding by the Pipkins.

No one but no one though will come anywhere near to Middle of the Road. She is my first, my last, my everything.    ;D

And the Roger Waters thing. No you didn't mention it. That's a surprise. Do you like him? Did you go?

Therefore, it must be approaching the aniversary of when I saw him in M/cr. What date was that?

..agreed. Bonus tracks are great, if they were on a separate CD. Classic case - Deke's Iceberg/Kamikaze on CD, two great albums,  but now difficult to listen to because of the 4 "bonus" tracks. She's a cow has to be the worst Deke song ever.. As a completist (except for KoN), I'm glad I've got them, but perhaps a "Rare Deke" would have been better.. I know I can program/select which songs to hear, but I don't and it can irritate so, especially when the rest is so good..

Another Meldrew moment but I have to get it off me chest.
The growing tendancy of young, and in some cases not so young people, speaking in some quasi Australian/American accent, where they seem to talk normally for most of the sentance, but the last half dozen words suddenly rise as if they were posing a question? Can only put this down to the rising influence of T.V garbage from the aforementioned countries. I know regional accents can sometimes annoy those from elsewhere, but give me those any day over this insidious creeping alien influence.

With you on that one, Rock. It wasn't so surprising when kids started doing it, as there is the issue of peer pressure, sometimes almost subliminal at that stage. But for an 'adult'.....pah! For one thing the brain has to make quite a concerted effort to change the way a sentence is delivered. Secondly that adult has made a conscious decision that he/she now sounds more interesting by speaking with the charisma of Prof Stephen Hawking's text-to-speech converter without having successfully installed Windows Service Pack 3. Personally I can't take anyone seriously who talks 'at' me like that.

It's in Hull, 107 miles away, about one and a half hours away.  Much discussion, I agree, but phone first to make sure it's available. He does so. We set off. Prof.... I have a confession to make. Thought about this when I read your post, alarm bells rang, and confirmed earlier today. I do this. I don't speak in a quasi Aust/Am accent, Salfordian remains as it always has been, but with some sentences, the last few yllables do rise as if I'm asking a question. Don't know why, or where it's come from. But it's there. And I hate Americanisms and stuff which have crept into the language. ('Snuck' anybody? Hate it!)

Anyway, sorry Prof. I will get out of it.

Pull yourself together man! The fate of the nation is at stake here! This dreadful scourge must be resisted with every fibre of our beings! The culprits should be dragged roaring from their beds and made to watch 100 consecutive episodes of neighbours as a reminder of the fate that awaits should such deviancy continue. No effort must be spared! You are not yet beyond redemption, drag yourself back from the abyss and revert to the lilting tones of your youth, lest ye be smitten beyond recognition!

And funnily enough, whilst driving last night, not thinking about it as such, but it came to me in a flash of inspiration. The Welsh do this ending a sentence with rise in tone and they always end the sentence with a question....don't they?  ;)

This time of year it's the tw*ts who drive around with their fog lights on as well as their headlights. Tw*ts!

Martin, be careful, Mr Woolfe doesn't like excesive use of the Tw*t word.  He's commented on how often I've used it in the past.  But what a fine resonance the word has.

..when there's as many deer as there are on the road, you need ALL your lights on..

So it sounds like you're calling me a TW*T MD..

Pete! I'm horrified that you would think that. I am of course talking about the incredibly common Tw*ttus Urbanus, whose use of foglights in areas of ample street lighting is inexplicable.

..there are two types of deer up here. One is the type owned by the Duke of Westminster, that if  hit it, and put in your boot, is called POACHING. The other kind (also owned by the Duke) is the one that hit with your car, that writes your car off. That one is called WILD ANIMAL..

A poignant post, Pete. Last Sunday, driving up to Teesside on a dual carriageway. A pheasant walks into the road right in front of me. Big thud, feathers everywhere like a fog in front of the windscreen, ran over it.  G/f dozing in passenger seat went semi hysterical.

Should have had my big b*st*rd foglights on.  :))

Not being able to enjoy a good documentary about an interesting subject anymore without having to listen to some god awful background muzak. Every decent programme has resorted to this insidious, emotional background garbage, with pianos and vio bloody lins building up to some pointless dramatic crescendo every 30 seconds. $%^&*"!  *&%!?.

Today's annoyance for me is UK-badged sites like amazon.co.uk trying to bring Black Friday over here.

Since we don't have Thanksgiving, and it isn't a public holiday, it's a commerce-driven foreign infection!

Don't know what it is and don't want to know. They can bring over Cipollina weekend if they want though.

My latest blood pressure raiser is the tendency for all home pages on the net to promote themselves as the top window on your monitor. I can't play crib or freecell whilst waiting for the site to load without it disappearing behind the browser window. I know I can resize or minimise but why the hell should I?  >:(

Now there's a two-edged sword for you.  When the Scot Nats (USKIP) start repatriating English landowners will the Tories (UKIP) deny them entry to Blighty as an non-EU immigrants?  ???

Pointless sponsorships.
Did you know than Man Ure have an "official global noodle partner"? www.manutd.com/en/Club/Sponsors.aspx?sponsorid...5586-47EC...

And this is their proud boast - "As we continue to uphold our founder’s spirit as embodied by the phrase “Peace will come to the world when people have enough to eat,” in order to revolutionize food culture around the world, Nissin Foods Group will pursue the various possibilities that food promises and bring forth deliciousness with dreams as we strive to become the “Earth Food Creator.” Moreover, through enriching mankind with the fun and joy that comes from food, we will keep doing our part for society and the world at large."

It's just b*ll*cks.  And it annoys the cr*p out of me - just like Pot Noodles do...
