Title: Wanted - Ten easy Manband related quiz questions
Post by: Jules on October 31, 2009, 03:53:24 PM
I'm just re-instating the Manband quiz section on the Archive.

I've created sets of twenty questions for the medium (Manfans), hard (Manoraks), impossible (Maniacs) and non-Man (Man Overboard) quizzes.

As part of the preparation I'm now inviting contributions of questions for the entry level quiz, which I'll be calling "Interested Bystanders".

If you can't manage ten questions I'll happily take five. If you can't manage five, I'll delete your Manband Forum account and banish you to the wilderness forever  ;D

Still working on including graphics and sound-clips, but you never know.

All ideas welcomed. Just post a reply to this message, as I'd expect most people who frequent this forum would be able to answer the easy questions without missing a step. No need to supply answers, I'll contact you seperately if you come up with something that leaves me completely flummoxed.

Not sure how easy these are.
1 Who supported Man on the Spring Tour 1974?

2 What was the name of the mail order service set up by A.H.A?

3 When Man played the Reading Festival in 1972 which day did they play: Friday, Saturday or Sunday?

4 Who were the headliners when Man played Cardiff Castle in 1975?

5 Who shot Mickey?

What is Micky's first name?
What is Deke's first name?
What is Will's first name?
Which Man is a Justice of the Peace?
Which man was Mark St John?

As much as I've enjoyed reading the suggestions so far, I think the easy questions should be the most fundamental Man facts. That's odd, I've gone all serious.

So how about....

1. From which country did the band originate;
2. Who was the only ever-present member until retiring through ill-health;
3. Their most famous album;
4. One of their most famous songs was named after a fruit - which one?
5. Name the guitarist who also had a solo career with his band 'Iceberg'.....

I'm stuck on four, Nick. After all, they did use to introduce it as 'The Vegetable Song'...

Whose hand is pictured on the cover of Maximum Darkness?
Which Man is smoking in blue?
What sort of profession was Micky Jones' learned trade?
Who inspired Mr Leonard to re-christen himself Deke?
Which Man is known for a strange choice of shoes?

I really like your suggestions to the Rhinos title esp. who shot Micky!  ;D

well these are some i am not sure about off the top of head (not entry level;slightly esoteric) 1.who sings what song on "revelation" 2.is everything in deke's book true? 3.who takes a solo on the whiskey a go go "american mother";deke, micky or both?does john cipolina take a solo on bananas and many are called but few get up (from maximum darkness)4.how many times has Man been to america? 5. to reiterate one of the last questions; i thought the cover of maximum darkness was a drawing at first but inside it says cover photo by (can't remember name).who is it a picture of?it looks like long hair like "chippo",but it looks like micky's guitar, and a leather jacket. who's jacket?-thanks...

Which Man song supposedly spells out PAPA NEZ on a telephone, and on some foreign releases actualy publishes his number?
How many minutes do the christians have to wait?
How many ounces does the second album weigh?

Louise was a bit of a goer, but how many days could she last?

Some great questions there chaps. Please do keep them coming.

I think some of the suggestions may go into more challenging quizzes than the entry level.

My favourite so far is definitely "Who shot Micky?"

Ho! True enough, Mr H. Shows you how much they know! Nevertheless....good point, could cause confusion and unrest, particularly amongst the more militant botanists. Could reword the question along the lines of 'name the song that could be found in a fruit and veg shop'...

Who is the guy with his back to the camera on the cove of Rhinos?

Is it not John the Helps Manager? If not, why not?

Which song could be found in a Chemist's shop?

(Twitch, Fumble, Feeling of Restlessness....) There could be two (arguably three) answers to this, depending on the chemist....

More....How about:

Why is 'A Sad Song' listed under G?

How come the link to George's site is still out of date?

What did Tweke hear for the first time the other day?

Banana is the common name for various herbaceous plants of the genus Musa. My belief is that they are vegetables, even though conventional botanists will try to tell you that the yellow Cavendish banana is strictly a fruit. Anyway, bananas will outlive the Cavendish which is currently as you know self-destructing.  However, the Cavendish is a tiny part of existing banana germplasm. The much more diverse plantain and even banana hearts are both vegetables used as staples by large numbers of people in tropical countries....

Who was it going on about Blue/black potatoes the other day? I thought StEvil, but can't see the message.
I had some the other day, peculiar things. Not like your purple carrots, or purple podded peas that go to a "normal" colour when cooked (orange and green). These tates stay a bluey-purpley-black colour, all the way through, and retain the colour on the plate. Taste like potatoes, but don't look like them.. Came from Norway, where they're suposed to grow best in the long cool summer days..

in high school i used to get a ride early in the morning with my dad before he went to work.there was this other strange artistic kid who used to get there early too.well one time he brought some banana peels to school.we went out to the woods and well we "smoked up".but the results were nebulous at best.maybe there is a certain way to prepare them that im not aware of.i can't remember all the details.i think he tried to dry them out first or something.that kid was a strange bird and yes it takes one to know one (although i think he eclipsed me in that department) but he could really draw, very artistic ...

I saw a cooking programme recently where someone made mash from these. It ended up as a grey gloop, that someone else described as wallpaper paste.

I might well have mentioned the Norwegian Blue, but going on about it...?

It has been recorded on these pages that I am the Norwegian expert on the Peruvian Blue potato and custodian of the national collection. It's time after 10 years to put matters right. Neither am I Norwegian, nor am I expert on the Peruvian Blue. I'm not Peruvian either - how would I have been knighted in that case? Anyway, may I introduce myself as expert and custodian of the Norwegian Bl? Kongo potato, and indeed many other wierd and wonderful Norwegian vegetables. See http://www.skogoglandskap.no/slideshows/1200481933.29/slideshow_view/11 (http://www.skogoglandskap.no/slideshows/1200481933.29/slideshow_view/11). Incidentally, I brought some seed potatoes with me on one of my raids to the old kingdom to see the Manband.

It didn't take long for our IPR to be violated and a Staffordshire company to introduce the blue crisp : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/2636939.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/2636939.stm) - as if this was some kind of brilliant idea that they had come up with? At least 10 years previous to this, I served up not only blue chips, but also blue mashed potatoes, much to the horror of vegetable hater Rover's parents.... Note that the Staffordshire company is based in Leek...now don't get me onto the subject of leeks or I will go on.....

By the way, there is no point in fighting it (Rover, are you listening?), but it's a fact of life that all discussion boards evolve sooner or later into Vegetable discussion boards.... I even hear that Rover grew a vegetable this year. Get it off your chest, Rover - tell us...we may be able to help...

Oh and one more thing - Pete T mentions black potatoes - we have those too; they're called Shetland Blacks; Shetland is still as you know the furthest west island in Norway.

Thanks for that, interesting site. Is there an English version somewhere? We're having a "Tattie Fest" in Kinlochbervie in nov, would be interesting to show some printouts. I was involved with the UK national willow collection, before I saw sense and came north.

Marvellous stuff, gang!

So Jules...in answer to your original post, I guess the answer to a question utilising the above few posts could be 'Freedom Fries', although I'm intrigued as to how you're actually going to word it.

You can smoke them too...

....as in 'Mellow Yellow' I believe.

On the same sleeve is that a cutout of MM? He's the only one that doesn't move.

In fact he does move, Mr D...I refer you to the pic in the 'Keep On Crinting' booklet...although the chief suspect in the 'Who Shot MJ' case is looking even more suspect...

Must say that I don't like bananas. Or the smell. And the texture. Or beetroot. Parsnips, turnips and avocado. Parmesan cheese smells of sick.

Parmesan cheese smells of sick.

Not if you grate it fresh.

The cheese that is, not the vomit. Grating fresh vomit, now that would be close to the top of my gross out list. At least it would do away with the diced carrots look though.

Hell, we're nearly neighbours, here in The Southlands..

Dear Southerner,

I'm at 63.5N, you are really in the deep south - Scourie wasn't it? A mere 58.3 or so I think! I incidentally cycled past Scourie in the pouring rain on the way to Durness ca. 1977....

This reminds me of visiting a bar in Taynuilt, Argyll some while ago now around mid-summer. The barman sneared at us and muttered something about sassenachs and how we'd not be used to it being light that time in the evening... The laugh was on us when we told him that where we lived we didn't see stars at all for 4 months or so in the summer...

Anyway, to Solanum tuberosum. A good starting point is the Nordic Gene Bank (Nordgen) - they are responsible for the Doomsday seed vault on Svalbard. In Nordic meetings, the language is usually English if Finns are present... Therefore, there's also an English version of the Nordgen pages. Here's the main potato page:

http://www.nordgen.org/index.php/en/content/view/full/309/ (http://www.nordgen.org/index.php/en/content/view/full/309/)

A book has been produced on heritage Nordic potatoes (it has an English summary of each variety):
http://www.nordgen.org/index.php/en/Vaexter/Innehaall/Plant-material/Potato/Nordic-Potato-Book (http://www.nordgen.org/index.php/en/Vaexter/Innehaall/Plant-material/Potato/Nordic-Potato-Book)

Another good European resource is the the European Cultivated Potato Database (link to the Bute Blue potato): http://www.europotato.org/display_description.php?variety_name=Bute%20Blue (http://www.europotato.org/display_description.php?variety_name=Bute%20Blue)

I'm responsible for the Norwegian Seed Savers, a group of amateur gardeners who have adopted various old vegetable varieties and are conserving them by growing. See http://www.nordgen.org/ngdoc/plants/hillerod/abstracts/Norwegian_Seed_Savers.pdf (http://www.nordgen.org/ngdoc/plants/hillerod/abstracts/Norwegian_Seed_Savers.pdf)

Otherwise, yes I did have a (heritage) banana in my garden this summer, not much in the way of fruit though (should I mulch it with chest hairs perhaps, Rover?)

Re- Willows: Do you have a source of Salix pulchra - the one which the Inuits harvested shoots of and served up in seal blubber or such like?

I'm fairly sure that Stephen (Steven?) Fry said on QI that if something has seeds on the inside - like a tomato - it's a fruit.  Unlike a strawberry which has seeds on the outside and is a fruit.  Perhaps I should stop now.  Well apart from mentioning 3-2.  Thank you and goodnight Cardiff City!

"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not treating a tomato like fruit".  Attributed to someone clever who's name I can't remember.
