Title: MICKY JONES 1946-2010
Post by: George Jones on March 10, 2010, 08:15:10 PM
Hello everyone, this is the message I hoped I'd never have to write.

It is with great sadness that I bring the news that my wonderful father Micky Jones passed away peacefully today at 12 noon.

I would like to thank you all for your support through the years, letting dad, his talent and music into your lives.

I would also like to thank you all for your support during his illness.

Let us celebrate this wonderful life and the fantastic memories he has brought us, I was so proud of him as a father and as a performer.   To share a stage with him and be part of that legacy is one of the proudest moments.

I will miss him, as im sure we all will  :'(

God Bless,

George Jones

All the undignified squabbles and debates of this Forum pale into insignificance with the weight of this news. Although we've all had time to adjust to the loss of Micky Jones' talents over the past few years, the loss of a father is the day every son dreads. George, and all your family, my deep and loving sympathy to you. There will be public duties to perform such as your announcement here, but take time for your private self.

George,

Deepest sympathy to you and your family.

I've lost both of my parents and something I think I can safely say is that you'll never get over it, you'll just come to terms with it.

I've loved your fathers work since seeing Man in the Patti, as a 16 year old,  just before BGTYALOAD came out.  I was astounded by his playing then and remain so to this day.

Take care.

George,

Sally, Liz, E and I all send our love and deepest sympathy.  The last few years must have been very difficult for you to cope with and you have borne it all in a dignified manner and never failed to champion your dear father with due and proper respect.  It says much of you.

What a good time he gave us all.  That will never be forgotten.  God Bless you Micky Jones. RIP

Impossible to add to what's already been said. A God-given talent who's even now, as George said, having a whiskey and a joint 'up there' somewhere...which is infinitely preferable to his recent existence.

Why didn't they take Phil Collins? Well, they've already got enough drummers - but there's only one Micky Jones.

Just learned the very sad news down here in Australia.

However inevitable this should one day come to pass it still hurts.

For me Micky Jones was the Heart & the Soul of the Manband. Thank heavens I was able to see him live in various incarnations of Man during the years I lived in Britain.

Heartfelt condolences to the Jones family.

Micky Jones RIP.

George, I have never met you or your father personally, but have seen you both play. I just want to add my condolences at this time. No words can alter the feelings of loss & sadness when a parent dies, even if it is expected. You and your family however are blessed in that as long as there are records/cds dvds etc your Dad is always there, as he once was, at his best doing what he loved;what he was so good at. I'm sure you are fully aware of the strong feelings of love and admiration that he engendered in us Manfans and I hope that you and your family can take comfort in that. Without knowing  it, he played a very big part in supplying the musical soundtrack for a large part of my life and I find myself with tears in my eyes. His passing reminds me at least of the fragility of our lives and the importance of valuing what we have. So, I have an ipod, loaded with MAN albums, but on my walk home tonight it just has to be C'Mon. Remember, as long as we cherish his memory he will never truly die.
My sincerest love and good wishes for you and your family
Bill Rait

OMG I am so sad about this news. I have cried today. The Man Band and especially Micky Jones were an intrigral part of my path of self discovery. I tripped so hard to the complex slashing guitar riffs that Micky spit out, like some angel from beyond the dells of my deepest imaginings. My warmest wishes of condolence to the entire Jones family, and sympathy for the many fans of this legendary guitar virtuoso.

I first heard Man at Trinity College Carmarthen in 1969 and realised immediately that they were special.Bought "Revelation" and "2 ozs" and could not stop playing the incredible Greasy Truckers live" Spunk Rock"- which i still think is the finest rock track of all time.Over the next 40 years l have been privileged to attend many Mangigs throughout Britain but particularly remember sharing a pint with Micky at "The Marquee" (in 1983 i think)when we had a gret pre- gig chat.Micky was so genuine and made me feel like i'd known him for years.
So.farewell to a very fine musician and to a very nice human being. You and the band truly enriched my life.Thank you.
Gone but what a legacy!

Very sad to hear this news.  My sincere thoughts with George and the family.
I was privileged to see Mickey perform at our local pub several times in the Forest of Dean in the 80?s during my teen years in the "non Man era".
He went under the pseudonym of ?Pete Brady? and we didn?t have a clue who he was except he was just an incredible guitar player.
Later on I discovered Man and went on to see them many times through the 90?s and beyond.
I had the pleasure of talking to him once or twice at gigs and he was a perfect gentleman.  I?ll never forget the anticipation of waiting for the sublime C?mon intro.
We were born in the same town ? if I had 1% of his talent I?d be a very happy guitar player indeed.
I?ll be getting the CD collection out this weekend......

The man from Merthyr produced some of the most inventive, soulful music ever and was a really nice chap into the bargain.
He's definitely going to appear frequently, guitar in hand, brightening up the corridors of my memory.
Micky ....... thank you very nice.

So sorry, George and family, for the sad loss of your father. Privileged to see him play many times and awestruck every time.
I had the good fortune to first meet him on the tour with Badfinger in support, and blagged my way backstage for a chat.  I had arranged a coach to the gig at the Birmingham Town Hall and the 40 or so on it had all had a sweep as to the opening number. I told Micky this, and what my pick was, and he changed the running order so I won. A true gent.

RIP Micky, and keep on crinting.

West Coast dude Mike Somavilla tells me that Barry Melton dedicated has show last night to the memory of Micky and to Martine Fierro who passed away 2 years ago on March 13th.

'The band kicked ass. Austin Delone sat in on keyboards because Banana is in Europe and Charlie Cockey who wrote Mountains in Dream land that Barry recorded on his ?The Fish? LP was in the audience. Charlie was also in the 60?s band Melvin Q Watchpocket.'

Sad that some of the responses on this one have headed off in the wrong direction. I've mailed the editorial team to see if that can be resolved. A personal plea from me to anyone who feels a need to wade in. Please think carefully about how any intemperate comments would reflect back on ourselves, on the band we love, and on Micky's memory.

Alan Jones, for the avoidance of doubt, this isn't addressed at you. I felt you had, and made, a fair point in a fair way. Sad that others (hiding being incomplete names I note) couldn't see that.

Been contacted by Rob Davies - our (only) favourite lawyer - who's not able to access the Manboard currently.  His message is as follows;-

Just seen the news about Micky on the BBC website; that is so very, very sad.

I cannot get access to the Man Board or sites any longer from work and have no net access at home.

If either of you are in contact with George and the band would you please pass on my condolences and sympathies.

What a loss - he was the finest guitarist I have had the pleasure to listen to whether live or on record. I still get goosebumps thinking of his playing let alone listening to it. And Michael, you did him proud in the TWC coverage and all your efforts for the band - ditto Jules and the site.

Very sad day for me too. ..as sad as a very cold evening at Watford Town Hall was happy in 1972 when I heard MJ live for the first time and found the band of my spotty teenage years.

MJ's solo on the outro of C'mon from Back ino the Future was my favourite for years and side 1 of Greasy Truckers is up there with Bob and Jerry on Dark Star and Duane and Dicky on Whippin Post, undiminished as unsurpassed twin guitar work outs. Spunk rock wins because it is grittier and more intense that the other two.

As for comparisons of playing style I see MJ as closer to Jerry G than Frank Z because there is a sweetness to both MJ's and Jerry's playing absent from Frank's.

I can only join in the condolences to George and family and say goodbye to a man who made my teenage years a lot brighter.

Just back home from Swansea. For those unable to be there in body I'm sure you were there in spirit.

It was a fitting service to commemorate Micky's talent and his qualities as musician and a gentleman. All Saints in Mumbles is a sizeable church, and  was very well filled with family, friends, and colleagues. Many familiar faces in the pews, both from past and previous incarnations of Man, of the Bystanders and from many other facets of the South Wales musical fraternity.

A dignified and straightforward affair, Canon Evans made tribute to the esteem Micky is held in worldwide (mentioning the Independent's obituary published that same morning), as well as the more personal relationships closer to home. The choice of hymns, Morning Has Broken, and The Lord Is My Shepherd was as full of light and optimism as the service itself. An airing for Jeff Beck's 'Where Were You' provided a reflective break before Deke was invited to say a few words of remembrance.

Deke's eulogy was as warm and affectionate as you?d expect, and his delivery was note perfect despite admitting he was twanging like a banjo on the occasion. He noted that Frank Zappa no less had named Micky as one of his top ten guitarists in the world, whilst wondering why, unaccountably, Zappa had missed himself from that same list. He recounted how he could often do little but stand back in awe as Micky, unchained, would reel off lick after magnificent lick in an improvised solo. Micky would never play the same thing twice, because he never ran out of ideas. He would play until he wanted to stop, everything sounding so perfect you'd swear he'd worked it out the night before, but, as Deke reminded himself, he couldn't have, because they'd been together all night, and all Micky had done was snore and grind his teeth. Deke closed by marking the loss of a musical sparring partner, ally and co-conspirator for so many years and most importantly a best friend, who leaves behind a massive hole to fill.

Micky was laid to rest under the gently rolling slopes of Oystermouth Cemetery, looking out West to the estuary, to the Atlantic and beyond. That seems about right to me.

peace, this photo came about because i was introduced at the club to Tweke upstairs who asked me if i had met Terry yet.so he brought me downstairs to a room where all four drummers were standing together.then the person who gave me a lift(a lovely chap named Roy) said let's take a picture,or maybe it was Tweke,i can't remember for sure.in the ensuing madness i was able to take a picture from my cell phone without me in it. here it is,sorry for the quality, but at least the timeline is correct(which i believe happened completely organically):

Davey, glad to see you. You looks very hippy.  :D
i kind of wished i airbrushed myself out of that one,not a great picture of me.i spent most of the day with my coat on because when i got in to the cottage where i was staying and opened my bag,i realized i had forgot to bring my proper jacket.another tragic thing about my existence is that at 39 i still don't know how to tie a tie.
Davey - just wondering how you got on with warm English (Welsh) beer?  It looks as if it's going down ok.

I expect you've heard of John Major - Google his comments on warm English beer.
the beer was fine.i think i only had one authentic one(out of three)because the person who treated me to my first didn't want to shock my system, and got me something american. i think i reacted by buying a stella.the third i think was english or welsh.then i was whisked out of there(to catch a train) before i said anything blatantly stupid...to end on a serious note :that was the most beautiful funeral and wake i have ever been to.i have only been to three, my grandparents and my beautiful mom's(which was a travesty).thank you for making feel it wasn't wrong for me to show up,i appreciate that-love and peace-davey... and Peace Micky, your music will be in heavy rotation this spring and summer(and after)...

My heart felt sympathy goes out to you, your family and friends. I was lucky enough to get into Man in the early 70's and I had the privilege of seeing Micky and the boys playing The Roundhouse, The Fairfield Halls, and Hammersmith Odeon amongst others, also with the Flying Pigs at the Tunnel Club. He?s of my favourite musicians. Thanks Micky. Great to see you keeping the music alive, George. I enjoyed the 100 Club gig ? was it really two years ago?

I thought it was pretty acute, even if not quite right.

Mickey, Deke and the Manband were more than just a band to me, the impact they made on me in the mid-70's shaped my life.  I have a steady job, a wife and kids, and normal friends, but even when I'm being normal, there's always just a chance that I'll put my Martin Ace hat on, and do something f***ing daft, or my Deke Leonard hat on, and say something profound (or maybe just twaddle), or best of all, my Mickey Jones hat on, and break out with the riff to 'Spunk Rock' in the middle of one of a song at any random wedding my band might be doing.  We even did Romain as an encore one night, and of course the bride and groom were rozzers (although regretably not Belgian).  And If there is any point to believing in God, as I do, then it's the hope that the end of life on earth means I can find a Man gig in heaven, and Mickey and his henchmen can REALLY stretch out C'Mon, for a day or so, or even more.

Small but reasonable tribute in Mojo this month.

It's a very small obit piece in the "real gone" section of the latest Mojo; no pictures and a slight inaccuracy, but at least he got a mention which is probably more than we could reasonably expect. I have every issue from no.1 and could probably just about fill one page with the collective references to Man since the start. It's almost like Man never existed.

I know that this is a MAN fan site and therefore I am probably not an unbiased commentator ,but I think that that says more about MOJO than the insignificance of MAN. So relax and don't worry about thwm. As long as wee keep going the MAN legend lives on  :)

And an education thing, I suppose. Even Churchill is going to be forgotten soon, apparently.

By 2090 future generations will no longer recognise Winston Churchill, new research revealed today....
(13 May)...

Winston Churchill 'set to fade from memory' (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/winston-churchill-set-to-fade-from-memory-1972501.html)

Sad news indeed, Man played a very large part in my musical education earlier in my  life.

My sympathies to George and his family.

Hi George. I have only just found out about your fathers passing. My thoughts are with you and the family. Micky was allways mty favourite guitarist and BGTY is still my favourite album of all time. Micky had a feel fot the guitar that put him head and shoulders above most and on a par with the best as having a distinctive style. Than you also to Jules who made me aware that Man were back gigging again therefore giving me the opportunity of seeing Micky / Deke / George in all their wonderful combinations. One of my happiest moments is actually getting to speak to Micky at Hawthorn Leisure Centre and then being able to stand right at the front of the stage to watch the magic close up. God bless you Micky and thank you for all the memories and great music.

MAN.....Micky Jones you were the very best, with your unique guitar playing and vocals. You bought to us much joy with your performances....I first saw you play at the Rainbow. I was 16 now 53 and many times between......The last song I saw you play was Georgia on my mind on one of your solo gigs....When we rewind to play your music. Micky  Jones you will always be on our minds....Thank you Micky Jones.

Dear George and family,

Such news travels slowly out here in the provinces (USA), and it is only now that I have learned of the death of Micky Jones.
I share your sorrow, for I adored the music that Mr. Jones made, and had secretly hoped that someday he may have recovered to the point where he could play with the band again.
Being stuck here in middle America, I never got to see him play with Man, but I have listened for countless hours to his fabulous guitarwork on recording. He will remain a fixture of my musical universe for the rest of my life, and as a music-history-professor-in-training, I shall endeavor to convince subsequent generations of his inestimable value to music.
As he used to ask in concert, "why do we keep losing the really good ones?" Goodbye, Micky.
