Title: Man at Leamington Spa, 2 May 2010
Post by: sonic_hawk on May 03, 2010, 10:44:05 AM
I stayed sober for Hawkwind @ Cardiff a couple of days ago, and planned to get slaughtered at the Leamington Spa "psychedelic sunday". Mission accomplished... but it does mean my recollections of the Man set are a bit wonky.

With only 45 mins allocated, they didn't have time to do much stuff off the new album and it would've probably been unwise anyway, judging from what I've read about it. This was an opportunity for Martin Ace to connect or reconnect his incarnation of the Man band with the current Hawkwind crowd, and so "Many are Called" and "Spunk Rock" got the nod.

I videoed over 8 mins of Spunk Rock & I'll post it on youtube when I get home. I'm just having another wake-up coffee in my hotel room at present.

I only seen Man once before, approx 1994, and I was royally blitzed, so I can't really make like I'm an expert... but they sounded pretty Man-ish and went down well with the Hawkwind crowd.

EDIT: my review of Hawkwind in Cardiff (http://hawkwindforum.freeforums.org/2010-04-30-cardiff-show-reviews-t2783.html)!

Just had breakfast... mainly coffees and cigarettes. Also, I looked in the mirror. Bad move. Bloodshot eyes, heavy-lidded, bags under eyes. ONOZ.

Just been looking thru the video clips and I see I forgot to say they did "Cmon" as well. The sound's a bit rough and the video quality is low-res cellphone, but I'll still post them on youtube later. I might even come back here and post the links, you never know!

Off to get me train now.

Q. Whats the difference between a Man gig and a Hawkwind gig?

A. There's and audience AND a band at the Hawkwind gig..

Okey-doke, will do.

Back at home in North Devon now, and transferring all the Leamington Spa AVI files from my laptop to my main computer. The fan's whining away like a chainsaw, so I'll have to delay tweaking and editing in Movie Magix... also, as my username hints, I'm primarily a Hawkwind fan, so I'll be doing a few of those clips first.

Rough guess, I think I'll start the "Spunk Rock" upload, at around 8pm. Oooo-er.

PS I do like to tidy my video clips a bit, with fade-in and fade-out, and maybe a caption too. That's why I'll be using Magix. 6pm now, and going to start the Hawkwind processing.

Sonic,

Good effort, pretty good recording in the circumstances.
Sadly it confirms my feelings towards the current lineup.
I shan't say anymore..  :'(

Yes, I think Phil is the highlight of the current line-up. It was so good to see him playing again last year in Fife, teh first time I've had the pleasure since the Up For The Day tour in 1973! For my money, he is some compnesation for not having Micky around any more, as a lot of my favourite moments involve the interaction between the two of them.

Strange. When I watched it, thought the band were playing Spunk Rock, while Phil was playing something else..
Did improve for his solo towards the end..

The song remains the same but this is not Man.I'm very sorry to say that after 40 years as a devoted Manfan the time has come to let go and remember them as the incredibly innovative band that they were (particularly in the 70's)....rather that than witness a continuing descent  into cabaret and pastiche.Nothing lasts for ever.

Although the fanbase is dissintegrating, hang in there.. There could always be some gems from the past lurking somewhere. If we lose you, you may miss out on something.. (I can live in hope!). While I don't agree with what the current lineup is doing, things may change for the better. They have changed (frequently) in the past..

George and Bob have a good project going..

.....While I don't agree with what the current lineup is doing, things may change for the better. They have changed (frequently) in the past..

Some of the recent talk about Man has, uncomfortably, reminded me of Hawkwind in the past.  There was a period where I went off tHawkwind totally - the 1986-1988 metal phase (Chronicles, etc) and also some of these comments I've seen about Martin Ace uncomfortably remind me of the Nik Turner vs Hawkwind shennanighans of years gone by, where fans vs fans caused a few ripples on the Hawkwind forum.

Anyway, all I wanted to say was: things may indeed change. Maybe for the better, and maybe for the worse. Prepare.

On a possibly-related note, I hope to post the gig intro, "cmon" and "many" tomorrow.

Actually, it's quite ironic that Hawkwind played Leamington Spa, because that's where Mr Kilmister got his nickname. It's true. Why don't you believe me?

Good point. I was wondering about T'Pau....from the Vulcan factory perhaps?

Currently on the upload is the gig preamble and then most of C'mon. I'll give the url when it's finished oozing through my 3-miles-from-the-exchange broadband connection!

It amused me that, at the end, Martin Ace waded into the murky waters of band member sackings... reminiscing about when one of the drummers, Alan Powell, was booted out of Hawkwind. I wonder if Dave Brock was in earshot!

That's on my "C'mon" clip, by the way... and I applied some compression and a high-end EQ boost to try to sharpen up that bit of the recording.

A sad viewing, but I guess it may have suffered from being recorded on a mobile phone, so perhaps some leeway could be given?

Not a pop at you in any way Sonic, perhaps just wishing for what was and will never be.  Or Whatever VDGG said.  Was it VDGG?  H to He who am the only one?  Nah, wasn't that one.

I s'pse you've mentioned them, but how were Hawkwind?  I saw them in a Swansea Valley festval called The Gwyl (unsurprisingly it translates as The Festival) at Ystalyfera RFC about 10 / 12 years ago.  Oh, my.  What a bemused crowd!!

;D

Now, then... this is supposed to be a review, albeit one that's heavily augmented by youtube clips... so I'll say I wasn't that impressed by C'mon. I didn't find it rough; I think I found it fairly flat and lacking in sparkle.

Many are Called, I found rather better. It had a bit of kick to it, although whether it would please Man traditionalists is quite another matter. I'll post that track probably tomorrow.

And Spunk Rock, yes I enjoyed it. You can tell by the way my camera's rhythmically bobbling around!

------------

Some other of my Leamington Spa clips:

Krankshaft (Bob Calvert collaboration band) - Lord of the Hornets (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REh7n__vskk) (parts)
Huw Lloyd-Langton (ex-Hawkwind) - Waiting for Tomorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUOga4jXLO8) (brief clip)

(This guy was in hospital six months ago, in grave danger of dying... so it was great to see him back on stage!)

Banco de Gaia (DJ mix outfit) - Spirit of the Age (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=466ERxVrfj4) (clip)
Hawkwind - with a new track, Prometheus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAerHBgKmDk), that'll be on their new studio album released 21 June. Yay!

Thanks Sonic..

A sad viewing, but I guess it may have suffered from being recorded on a mobile phone.....

I shouldn't wonder. Perhaps there were all sorts of subtle overtones that my camera mic just missed ;D

Well, I'm not an accomplished wordsmith when it comes to doing reviews, as I daresay you've noticed on this thread!!

My review of Hawkwind two days prior is here (http://hawkwindforum.freeforums.org/2010-04-30-cardiff-show-reviews-t2783.html) and Leamington wasn't all that different.

Well, we do have a similar tendency, but 'davemod', although he moderates with a light touch, does gently remonstrate when we start flying off on tangents. I think he's got us fairly well trained, now!

The HW forum was set up by the band and is HW territory, a side-branch of hawkwind.com, so they have to enforce a few basic standards. For instance, gratuitous swearing is a no-no.

---

Soon, I'm going to commence mixing down the 650 MB AVI clips of "Many are Called" - to create a WMV file that I can upload to youtube within a tolerable timeframe. The mixdown will take around 90 mins and max out my CPU (so I can't start it yet) and then the upload will take around another 90 mins.

We're quite a civilised bunch, so we don't need much nudging really :)

The third and last of my Leamington clips is now on youtube...

Many are Called (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOsmGOGaf2g), which, in set-list terms, belongs between C'mon and Spunk Rock.

It's my usual unsteady camerawork and with bits missing, but it all adds to the charm, doesn't it? It's followed by most of the band introductions.

Thanx; I enjoy getting clips but the handheld quality is directly proportional to my beer intake. My Falmouth 2009 work is pretty horrendous. I was pacing myself at Leamington, and was only half-pissed for Man!

A transcript? Anyone fancy doing that? I assume you mean the bit where he's going on about Alan Powell, and I wouldn't mind reading that, if anyone wants to give it a go.

Attendance... well, the evening crowd was around 1000 but, at 6pm (when Man kicked off) a lot of people were at the bar or outside the venue, at the pub over the road, or just chatting elsewhere. Rough guess, I'd say 400-500. You can see I switched sides for Spunk Rock, to film from front left, and it wasn't particularly difficult.

Also, the shots I got from rear centre were when I was on my way back from the loo or bar, and I had no difficulty reclaiming my vantage point at the front after.

Well, I've never seen anything about it. This would have been June 1975, shortly after Lemmy got detained in Canada. (Starfarer (http://www.starfarer.net/gigs1975.html))

It's nice relaxing mood music... I could imagine this playing in a restaurant as I guzzle a vindaloo and wash it down with a lager or three.

Or a plush lounge, where I wander in, in a clingy mini-dress and fishnet stockings... and head over to the wealthiest-looking bloke and murmur, "Hiya, big boy... you looking for some action?"

OK, perhaps I'll stick to the curry scenario, for now ;D

As you see, some of the previous mumbling turned out to be referring to Mr DikMik, although I'm sure Mr Hawk will soon point out that he had in fact left some time before.

Our association with Hawkwind goes back many years as you probably know - we went to America with them and I remember doing a great tour in France with Hawkwind and I can't remember who was in the band then, probably DikMik or somebody like that, or what's the other fellow's name.....the drummer got sacked 'cos he was caught in possession of Herbie Hancock tapes...Alan his name was....(offstage vox - Alan Powell)...Alan Powell, that's right. And he was sacked for that very reason. So not too much of that jazz nonsense with Dave."
As you see, some of the previous mumbling turned out to be referring to Mr DikMik, although I'm sure Mr Hawk will soon point out that he had in fact left some time before.
thanks for the updated transcript.good to know that it was not Martin himself who couldn't tolerate "jazz nonsense"...

Are we sure that it isn't Del's grandson?

Or Wayne Rooney's secret separated co-joined twin... hmmmmmmm

DAVE: "Hi De Hi, everybody!"
AUDIENCE: "Ho De Ho!"
DAVE: "Your Captain can't hear you. Hi De HIIII!"
AUDIENCE: "HO DE HOOOOO!"
DAVE: "Now young Alan has been listening to Herbie Hancock tapes. What do you think we should do?"
AUDIENCE: "Throw him in the pool".
DAVE: "Your Captain still can't hear you. WHAT DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD DO?"
AUDIENCE: "THROW HIM IN THE FECKING POOL!!"

A ONE! A TWO! A THREE.....(Large splashing sound, audible sigh of relief from roadies)

DAVE: "Arr-uhh-arr-uhh-arr, howzabout that then boys and girls. Rattle, rattle jewelry. The duchess.

Now then, now then, now then. We've got a young lad here, he's written in, 'Dear Dave, can you fix it for me to be in a band that gets absolutely nowhere through lack of decent material despite having talented players including the bloke you've just thrown into the pool. I'm very shy so I'll stand behind you out of harms way. Thanks, Paul'.

Well, Paul...I can certainly fix that! You could say this is how I get my Kicks, arr-uhh-arr-uhh-arr. Howzabout The Red Cow, Hammersmith, rattle rattle?"

What's the story with this Stacia? I only know Deke's song.
...is there more footage in existence? she is rather majestic...

Vintage and current footage of Stacia temporarily appears around 47:30 here, Davey: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00sl4mb/Im_in_a_Rock_n_Roll_Band!_The_Other_One/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00sl4mb/Im_in_a_Rock_n_Roll_Band!_The_Other_One/)

To view it, you will need to download the BBC iPlayer - not sure if this is available outside the UK. Also not sure if this clip can be saved somehow, you know how confused I get with typewriter based technology.

She's a NICE girl.... when I saw H'wind at the 1975 Reading Fest, she pulled some girl out of the audience and did a very lewd bump and grind with her! The band was not pleased

Sonic hawk could you tell us,is there more footage in existence? she is rather majestic...

I don't know of any apart from Urban Guerilla (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2UUdMaB2wo).

This 2007 remaster shows what remains of the original footage, with photos to fill the gaps. Released on the EMI "Space Ritual" audio DVD...
