Title: MICKY JONES TRIBUTE CONCERTS
Post by: George Jones on June 21, 2010, 08:23:38 PM
Micky Jones Memorial Gigs

The life of Micky Jones, guitarist and singer with progressive rockers Man, will be celebrated this September by not one but two memorial gigs. Both take place at the Pontardawe Arts Centre, Swansea, on 3rd and 18th September, and the bills are packed with contemporaries anxious to play their part in honouring a Welsh rock legend.
Micky Jones was the only ever-present member of Man, who split in 1976 and re-formed in 1983, until a brain tumour caused his departure in 2002. He returned briefly two years later but retired from touring in 2005 and passed away this March. His inspired improvisation was well known throughout the music business and Frank Zappa, himself a master of the art, rated Micky one of his favourite six-stringers.

The initial show on Friday 3rd September will feature Racing Cars, re-forming for the occasion, plus Sassafras, Edgar Broughton and for one night Micky?s son George?s new band, the appropriately named Son of Man, George felt it right for this night to call the band under that name.

Saturday 18th at the same venue will see Jones? long-time guitar partner in man, Deke Leonard, bring his Iceberg ot the stage for an all too rare gig. In support will be the Flying Pigs (a band Micky graced during Man?s 1977-82 hiatus), plus the Green Ray featuring ex-Man bassist Ken Whaley.  Many more artists are expected to be announced in for this special event in due time.

It?s gratifying so many of Dad?s contemporaries are taking the time to participate. We know fans will be flying in from all points of the compass to join in too, and these events will be a celebration of his ability to touch fans and fellow musicians alike.?

Tickets will be avaliable soon from Derricks/Ticket Wales (standing Tickets) and The Ponterdwe arts center(Balcony/seated tickets).

Good news!
What a sadness not to have the new MAN band.
I hope at least there are Phil, Terry, Tweke and others among the guests...

Great news - any recommended accomodation in the area?

i shall be there for the second gig (but not the first as I am already booked to see Peter Rowan at the Didmartin Bluegrass festival).

Obviously great news, but dilemma's galore.

Money and logistics make 2 gigs difficult
But at least there's a couple of weeks gap
If I can only do one gig, I'd want to do the 3 Sept SOM gig, but no interest in the other bands
Load of interest in all the bands, esp Green Ray, on 18 Sept, but SOM are more important to me
And of course, it's not about the bands, it's about the occasion
Shakers are at home on both those weekends, so that's 2 home matches missing. Not a dilemma that one, though. If anybody wants a season ticket for those matches, well you're not having, cos you should be at the gigs!!!

Oh b*ll*cks, gotta do the 2 definitely (almost another song title there)

This link may help get you started.  I'll ask around to see if there are any pubs nearby that have rooms.  Not sure there are though.

The distances shown are a bit iffy.  One of them states 3.7 miles to a place in Port Talbot which is a great understatement.  I think the distances shown may be from Neath rather than Ponty.

The Red Lion in Morriston has rooms and is about a 15 minute taxi ride away.

Two gigs and a two-week-gap in between. Difficult. I want to see Son Of Man. I want to see Deke and I want to see any band that will feature Clint. I'd love to roll in at both weekends ... difficult ...

The Pen yr Allt pub in Alltwen (just above Ponty) and possibly The Dilwyn in Ponty itself may be able to help with rooms.

What about good ol' Oystermouth Rd? I think between us all, we must have stayed at every B&B there. It won't be the same if I'm not on Oystermouth Rd  :)

Cab from town to Ponty will be around ?20 to ?25.  Bus (on the way up, probably not an option on the way back) is about ?3.50.  Not much in it if there are enough of you in the cab.
Title: Re: MICKY JONES TRIBUTE CONCERTS
Post by: Mike Morgan on June 22, 2010, 09:21:04 PM
Should also mention a bus would take 50 / 60 minutes, but very scenic!.  Cab on the way back 25 min or so.

On the way up, depends on the traffic - Steve Winwood! Steve Winwood! - but maybe another 10 minutes depending when you leave town.  After 6:30 / 7:00 it's a doddle.

Just made enquiries about this bunkhouse, http://www.stayinwales.co.uk/detail.cfm?i=2135, any one interested if it's available. Would mean taxi/minibus, as it's further than out in the middle of nowhere.. Can do a guided 11 mile walk around the waterfalls sometime over the w/e..
It's actually about half way between pontneddfechan (pont neath vaughn) and ystrafellte. Gills mum used to live next door at Hendre bolon, which is nearer to nowhere than the middle. Otherwise we'll stay in Penderyn with friends if we can't find a b&b nearer.. (..and I'll have to drive :'()

Post by: Mike Morgan on June 23, 2010, 07:11:07 PM
It's a lovely bit of country, but Oystermouth road could well be a more interesting option as you could hit Wind St after the gig.  Depends what you're after.  Driving maybe be the only option if you stay in pontneddfechan  as some of the local taxi firms can be reluctant to take a fare with no prospect of picking up a return fare.

Culture or beer?  Same thing to me.

A good pub for those who want to meet up in near the venue would be The Pontardawe Inn, known locally as The Gwachell (pronunced Gwaacchelle , semi hard middle 'c' not like Michelle.  Imagine the sound of clearing your throat).  5 minute walk. Real ale, food, home to some of the best bits of what was known as the Pontardawe folk festival. but now has another title incorporating universiality and a more diverse reference.

I am in the San Francisco area and I will not be able to make it to either of the concerts.  Are the concerts going to be recorded as this might be a way for the people who can not attend to listen to the music. Of course there should be a charge/donation for the music?

I know, did a survey after my visit to the site, and told them what I thought about it.

Bunkhouse is booked. 3 b&b's available though..
Would prefer to walk to the gig and have some beers though. Doesn't look like theres a lot of b&b's in pontardawe though..

I have my feelers out - ooh er missus - but wouldn't hold out much hope for B&B in Ponty.

As I type I'm wondering if the Ponty festival site may be helpful?

May be a source of info re B&B's?  Perhaps not the site itself, but an e-mail asking for info....?

Something I've just remembered - The guy who kept the Pen yr Allt was a mate of Rick Wakeman and he used to stay there when he was in the area.  Don't know if the same guy is keeping it now.

This as pointless as you want it to be.

Now then, next May...

..Padtardawe Arts Centre..
Now for the tickets..

PONTARDAWE..

Booking tickets not so easy..
Tried the Arts Centre site, and have to create an account, so filled in all the info.
Then get an error message saying my phone number, e-mail and postcode aren't in the right format..
I type my phone with a gap between the area code, and then without the gap, e-mail in CAPS, then lower case, and finally post code with and without gaps, upper and lower cases, all combinations off, and then gave up and went to Derricks. They don't even list the gigs..
Guess I'll have to phone PAC tomorrow..

well, it's 10 miles from Oystermouth Rd to the Arts Centre, so I think I'm on Oystermouth Rd, and either drive, or share a taxi if there's a few of us. Of course that also supposes somebody would share a taxi with me  ::)

Apologies for the typo when I first mentioned the Dillwyn (with two "l's").  Take a right out of the front door and the Arts centre is about a two minute walk down Herbert St and is on the corner of the first road junction on the left.

Herbert st is rammed with all sorts of restaurants and take aways, Indian / Chinese / kebabs / chippies. The Indian Cottage is a particularly good, er, Indian restaurant.

The Gwachel is just a few minutes further on and when you get to the end of the road the pub is at the bottom of the bridge / flyover / river crossing / whatever it's called on yourpizza / right and set in a bit of a dip.

There's a Tesco nearby for those of you who are travelling and don't want to pay motorway prices for a bottle of water or whatever.

I'm beginning to feel like a rep for the Ponty tourist board; I don't live there by the way and am not on commission from anywhere I've mentioned :D

So, you had to buy THOSE Roger Waters tickets.. :o

What would make the 18th absolutely perfect, a suprise visit by Barry Melton to join the Green Ray for a few numbers..
C'mon Baz, nearly three months to sort out a flight..

Unfortunately he's in Toronto ( always wondered about the Lone Ranger's preferences) on the 18th and the 3rd looks unlikely because he's in happy class.

He came down this way in 86/7 to record Pontardulais Male voice choir for The Tide is Turning off KAOS.

He then invited them to go on tour with him and when they heard the album the said No way pedro or similar.  They'd only heard their bit and when they heard the album they were mortified.

Get down the pits and earn a decent living.  Ah, forgot.  The Thatcher bitch psycho revolting thing from Hell closed them down.  Not that I have a strong opinion...

I have been to Grantham and it is beyond the most boring place in the country.  Been a while since I saw someone and his bike in a pub.

Tickets are being printed and will be avaliable next week.

The Gig will be filmed for those who are unable to attend.

As stated before, more artists are expected to participate.

There hasn't been any gigs like this for a while, so it's difficult get all these people together.  But it's sure to be a grand celebration of a great life.

The M/cr posse which at its post 1983 height, reached 8 has booked itself into Glevdon Park Hotel, Oystermouth Rd.

Unfortunately, at present, this amounts the paltry number of 1, and I'm originaly from Salford, currently living in Bury! I hope another Bury resident joins me, and a resident of Southprt too. Although he has experience of a breakfast at Glevdon Park with the chef (sic - very sic) coughing his guts up over our bacon and eggs!

By the way, Bannon is in Greece as we read this. Isn't it great when somebody else pays all that money to go abroad and get the sun (the yellow thing, not the paper), and it's hotter in the UK.   8)

I received this from Joanna, his representative -

Quote
McPhee & the Groundhogs played on the same bill as Man on many occasions (particularly in the  70's) and we last saw Micky at 100 club, it seems not so long ago. Tony always admired his guitar playing, particularly his fluid style.

Unfortunately Tony had a stroke last year and  this affected his ability to speak quite severely, although he is now making some recovery. He is now gigging although has a deputy singer at present.

Respect due for turning up to pay tribute - in those circumstances, not remotely bothered about how good/bad/indifferent any perfomance might be.   Got to admire the guy for his fighting spirit though!

Be careful we stayed there a couple of years ago abd the beds were alive, we had to buy spray before we could sleep, got back to germany and both of us were covered in bites not a pretty site the day before Christmas..........

Can confirm that the Scottish will be three and possibly four strong for the second of the gigs, but will just be the two Herons for the first one.   So there'a another room become available at the Dilwyn although I gathered that there was already someone looking for it so it may well be gone by now.

September seems like ages away but it won't be long before these gigs come rolling round.

I just have to slum it with Elvis Costello this evening to keep me going  :D

Thanks Pete. I did put in my post though that I had stayed there when it was MJ's funeral, and John Bannon met me for breakfast. A bit worrying when the chef...chef??? was coughing his guts up and he appeared with our breakfasts, wearing chef type clobber that hadn't been washed for years, but hey ho, less than 1/2 the price per night of the others, and for two gigs is a big saving. The owner and son are quite batty. A bit like Basil and Sybil. It's what Oystermouth Rd B&B's are all about.

Nik Turner will be making a guest appearence at both shows as well as John Mckenzie who will hopefully join us on the 18th.

Their will be a merch stall with lots of goodies, including rare prints/posters, t-shirts and an auction of some of Micky's items including the Jacket worn on The Bananas Marquee Video.

More news as it comes.

Micky Jones Memorial Gigs

Tickets will be avaliable soon from Derricks/Ticket Wales (standing Tickets) and The Ponterdwe arts center(Balcony/seated tickets).

http://www.derricksmusic.co.uk/tickets.php
http://www.neath-porttalbot.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=1678&lang=en

Tickets ?12.50 adv / or ?15 on the door

Special Deal, tickets for both Shows ?20, booking fees not included.

Tickets available from Ponterdawe Arts Center and Derricks Records, Swansea

I went direct to the Pontardawe Booking Office by phone (open afternoons only) and spoke to a human being. I booked seats upstairs, but was told that gets you access to the downstairs standing area too. I believe that they do sell standing tickets as well, contrary to previous information. No booking fee, and only 50p extra to post all tickets out (which arrived a couple of days later). Splendid.

I then went to Derricks, a real record shop that deals with customers and supplies a legendary service. Bought two tickets with a ?2.50 booking fee each, and ?1 postage. About 10 days ago, and still not arrived yet. There's service for you.. :-\

I wondered about the 'giving access to downstairs' bit.  It's a fairly small venue and if everyone from the balcony came down stairs, it could be quite overcrowded and possibly dangerous (dangerous are not related to Australian marsupials who can be trained to box).  Mind if you know Ponty...

Hi all, Derricks have not recieved all tickets yet, they are taking orders, the will have them in the next couple of days.  I am paying for this myself as well as putting on both gigs.  So when they've contacted me to pay for the tickets, they will be sent to Derricks.  The tickets have a nice pic of dad on them so they will make nice souveneers.  Ponty are selling their own tickets, these ones are as someone stated avaliable now.

Both gigs will start around 7:30ish.

After finally knowing how many of us were going i just tried to book 4 tickets for each night. Apart from the booking fee of ?2.50 per ticket, of which i could except if it was going to the causes involved, they also wanted a fee of ?5.25 P&P per transaction for the tickets making a total of ?10.50.  :o >:(. On asking about the 2 for ?20(exclusive of booking fee) deal that was mentioned here by GJ,the guy at Dereks knew nothing about it whatsoever ??? I was of the understanding this was not only a show in Micky's memory, but also to raise money for the Awel Y Mor nursing home, and a headstone for Micky . As the deal of 2 for 20 was not possible, why do they not put the extra ? 2.50 per ticket they are charging directly to the said causes...  To send 4 tickets from Swansea does not cost ?5.25 a time, and the booking fee of the tickets should go directly to the worthy causes IMO. We will now hopefully be able to pay on the night, that way at least the cash will be handed over at the venue on the night, and hopefully go directly where it is needed.

If it is signed for then that is acceptable,i was under the impression it was otherwise, and will re-tract the comment. I still think on occasions like these, certain fees should go directly to the said causes.

Tickets booked for hotel, 15 minute walk/stagger to the Arts Centre. And me being me, did a bit of bartering, and blagged a reduction in price. Bannon - look and learn, look and learn.

Not the usual Oystermouth Rd Guest House/chef coughs in the breakfast as originally planned. On MJ's funeral, we said that should be the closing of the book. Great memories of Oystermouth Rd, it's only right they remain in memory as MJ does.

My job was to book the hotel, JB's job is to get the tickets. As Sesame Street used to sing........ 'co operation'......

PS on the hotel website, on the 'Rooms' section, picture of a four poster bed. I wondered why John wanted to share a room. Not blinkin' likely  ;)

Squalid! Ponty doesn't do squalid.  It dreams of being squalid.

Only reason I asked is the '15 minute walk' statement.  The Dillwyn is somewhere that if you had a decent cold you could spit as far as the centre.  The Penyrallt could be 15 minutes away if you put a bit of effort in on the way down, but would probably need about three hours to walk back to as it's all uphill and steep!

Planty of local cab firms around to get you back if you are in the Penyrallt (Penyrallt loosely translated = top of the hill.  Says it all really!).  Nice pub.

If you want a bit of history to stun the locals with, look up Gwenallt who was a local poetic icon, but has long gone from this earth.

OK. Know roughly where you are from the photo.  It may have been called the Butchers fairly recently and had a decent reputation.  I think it has beaten 'squalid by quite a distance', but is still a bit of a bugger to walk back to.  Not sure if all the walk has pavements.  Prob ?3 or ?4 for a cab which is more than likely worthwhile each way.

Anyway, the Green Ray CD's are rubbish. And the Help Yourself CD is even worse.

They make good wipe-clean beermats. :P

A pavementis where people park their cars or vans.

I found out today that The Celtic Lodge used to be called The Penyrallt.  I have agreement that 15 minutes to walk to the venue is optimistic.

Pete, why did you order from Derricks?

Arts Centre tickets can be used for seating and standing, Derricks standing only. Arts Centre have a much lower booking fee and a much lower p&p fee.

Without wishing to intervene (if I didn't want to would I have made this post?!)  initially it appeared that Arts centre (AC) only sold balcony tix and Derricks only sold standing tix.  Don't know why that decision was taken - an AC requirement perhaps?  Not immediately apparent that AC tix would allow access to the standing area.

Having looked at the venue plan, it holds 450, 150 roughly being seated (ooh er missuss).  I have asked before about how crowded the standing area would be if it's a sell out.  Let's hope that question is answered on the night.

Just had a reply from Derricks they say its too expensive to send tickets to Germany?????? I paid nearly 20 pounds for each ticket with the postage and booking fees I am not very happy with these Rip Off Merchants as HMV only charge me 2.00 pound postage for 5 tickets the other day

Nice bit of publicity for the shows.

Only just realised that I don't know who was in the flying pigs - I'm someone can enlighten me.

Poor response from Derricks.  Did they know the tix were due to go to Germany when you ordered them?  My place of work sends out stuff all over the world and I don't recall a major issue with postal costs to Germany, even if they are being sent by special delivery.

I phoned Derricks and the Arts Centre.

Derricks, though not rude by any means, did not want to help at all. Just told me to look at the website.

The Arts Centre couldn't do enough to help. Gave me loads of info I didn't even ask for, gave me names of local accommodation, and even dug the phone numbers out for me.

Didn't go on about pavements or the lack of, nor the history of Wales as we've had here, mind  :)

The Flying Pigs were a 3 piece who played the london pub rock circuit in the early '80s, and were:-
Mickey Jones - Guitar
Mick Hawksworth - Bass (ex Alvin Lee)
Phil Little (drums)
A CD was issued in 2003 - Point  PNTVP131CD

Yes they knew it was to Germany as you fill in the address etc for the Delivery and Credit Card Details, as I am originally from the UK I get post regular from there, and a small Parcel only costs a couple of quid, yet 4.50 is not enough to send an envelope, they also dont send recorded delivery and now dont answer emails..... all I can say is its a PISS POOR ticket outlet.

I asked about postage to Germany while I was in work today to see if my earlier comment was fair, and a few people said the difference was negligible (or is that an alluring item of lady's nightwear?). Seems like Derricks are twats  IMHO.  So there.

Nice to see Leeds lose to Derby as well.

Hello everyone!

Not sure whether its been mentioned elsewhere but Effigy will be filming the 2 memorial shows for a possible future DVD release.

We will also have some merch there including some previously unreleased stuff featuring Micky. All profits from these will be donated to the Micky Jones Headstone Fund, Awel-YMor Care Centre and the Samantha Dickinson Brain Tumour Trust. So please dig deep for these very worthy causes!

I know George is planning some special collabarations for these concerts with members of the extended manband family and contemporaries / friends from other bands. So these should be great evenings and a chance to celebrate Mickys life, music and acheivements.
Hope to see you all there.

Love and peace...

So then, let's take the 3rd Sept gig first. Are we arranging a meet?

Looking at various reviews, I'd suggest :-

Pink Geranium pub  ("the busiest pub in Pontardawe. Live Music every friday and Saturday, it gets packed so make sure your in before 10.45 or the doors will be closed. Brilliant crowd suited to the over 25's every single drink under the sun and Stuart the landlord prides himself on his cask ales. Well worth a visit ")

then

curry at the Indian Cottage (" Indian Cottage in Pontardawe is an institution rather than a restaurant! It has been going for more than 30 years, and has always been a sound, good quality and friendly restaurant for more than two generations of diners.")

These are quotes from reviews.

Both are on Herbert Street, which coincidentally, is where the Arts Centre is........... Unbelievable.

Say from 5.00pm?

Tuckmeister.... I owe you a gallon's worth  :)  :)

Thanks for pointing that out Rob, yep, 18th it is..

Once turned up on a saturday afternoon to watch Northampton play Gloucester, only to find it had been played on friday night.
A mate of mine went to see Luton play at Northampton FC, saw a crowd and floodlights and got in the queue, when he got into the ground, couldn't work out why the goalposts were taller than usual, and didn't have any nets..

Absolutely no chance of getting to the gig in time, or even for that matter getting back to Swansea before stupid o'clock, so I won't be at this gig. Cost of car was ok, it was the insurance. And was largely why I went to the Plough in December with 10 to myy name

I remember seeing this show line up, sort of.  It's been a while...  Don't remember what Spiv did in the September tour, but...

The Christmas Party had Vyvian (Spiv) Morris [apologies if I've spelt the name incorrectly) doing what was loosely described as a Panto.  I think it had some sort of chemical theme and have some recollection of a hugely oversized syringe.
Don't remember much else apart from the police sirens at the end of Life On The Road (which needs to be written in full as this could end up being sidetracked into a film about Hobbits and rings - don't remember any police in that, though) being so loud I couldn't face getting up for school the next  morning.
Oh yes, school.  As I said, it's been a while.

Just wondering if Life On The Road was inspired by Lord Of The Rings.  Some similar themes, particularly if you consider the content of WR&L!

This line-up was the first time I saw Man, so I remember it well. Spiv did some fairly crazy stuff with a giant Rizla packet and (I'm pretty sure) a huge phallus, and almost certainly the routines which crop up on Happy Daze. Iceberg were fabulous, John St Field a bit self-indulgent (wasn't he being billed as a ridiculously talented multi-instrumentalist? it just seemed like showing off to us!) and Man of course were mind-blowing, at the height of their powers. This was all in the Caley Cinema in Edinburgh. I had slipped away from boarding school to attend, sneaking out through a studyroom window. Because I was supposed to be working late, I was in my regulation issue schoolboy slippers and forgot to change out of them. Made stamping the cinema floor to demand an encore a bit of a waste of time. But I still have the skeleton t-shirt I bought that night. Happy days indeed.

Couldn't even hazard a guess as to how many times I've listened to that, but it still never ceases to amaze me.  Can't imagine how impressive it would be if I actually understood how to play it.

Roll on the 18th.

Pink G still the preffered meeting place for Saturday?  If it looks as if it might be the last meet, I better get my butt up there for my first.

Anyone from the North attending Saturday's gig in Pontardawe should take care to avoid the Birmingham area during the drive back on Sunday.

We wouldn't want anyone to get stuck behind the Popemobile (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/16/papal-visit-itinerary), would we?

So, the Pink Geranium, meeting place for a group of Manfans. I can see how this could be misinterpreted by those who arrive on the other bus.

Anyway, transport now sorted there and back (especially back as I'm not confident about bus links between Ponty and Tycroes at that time of night) so hope to put faces to names and renew old acquaintances.

What time do you guys expect to start getting there?

A question for those of you who were there at the 3rd, doors (please no Lizard King [or was it leopard skimn?] jokes) were at 7:30, what would seem to be a wise time to get in as this isn't one of those gigs where most people would think I'll miss the support band'.

We went in at 7.30 ish, and had to wait in the bar ages until hall doors were opened. Still think 7.30 will be the time to turn up, though.

Ping G was a great pub, nice conservatory area and the couple of proper beers were good. Can't comment on the fizzy euro stuff that some people drink  :)

Bar was very busy and overcrowded waiting to get in at 1930 last time around.   As Rob says, Pink Geranium was a nice pub and just across the road from the Arts Centre (but then again, I think everything is!!)

We'll be leaving Glasgow a bit sharper than last time - with a bit of luck I'd like to think we might be able to make the Pink Geranium washed and watered no later than 1800.

Have fun all - I nearly made it, but my meeting in England was postponed to the end of next week.
The potato workshop is sadly cancelled. LET IT GROW!

Ponty has only just got out of the 16th century, so 1800 may be a bit hopeful.

Davey - where are you; what are your plans?  Hope you've had a nice time so far.

Just read on the text that Herbert Street is closed both ways due to a gas leak!
Isn't that where the gig is?  :(

From the BBC website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/local/southwestwales.shtml

Herbert Street Pontardawe
both ways between A474 James Street and Tawe Terrace  closed
Neath Port Talbot - Herbert Street in Pontardawe closed in both directions between the A474 James Street junction and the Tawe Terrace junction, because of a gas leak.
