I think we've discussed the merits or otherwise of tribute bands on these message aoards a number of times.
IMO, and as is often the case, there are two sides to the story. On the one hand, they are taking the places of up and coming young bands who have their own music. On the other hand, I have heard promoters confirm that the tribute bands keep the small venues open as without them, the young bands would have nowhere to play!
Yes there are tribute bands out to make the quick buck, but there are tribute bands who genuinely play for the love of the music.
And in these difficult times, are tribute bands providing employment to seriously talented musicians who for one reason or another, are not in an 'originals' band? Or supplementing income? They have a right to earn a living.
Out and out condemnation of tribute bands, could be seen as offending some people very close to our hearts!!
Regarding Man tribute bands. I don't think it takes an Einstein to realise that a Man tribute band as such will not be commercially viable.
I don't know the setlist of Will's Misfits other than Keep On Crinting, but I presume it's that Man era music plus Alkies & Neutrons perhaps? I hope so, cos I'd travel miles and miles to see that. As one off performances, I'm sure they'd do fine. I wouldn't call what they are doing a tribute band, though.
I thought some time ago, George had said his and Bob's band were not going to be called Son Of Man. I feel it is a good name in its own right. I would not like George and Bob to be performing solely or even mainly Man songs as their setlist. They should be cracking on with original material, with the occasional nod to Man songs George wrote, if they want.
And lastly, I cannot believe I disagree with the mighty Heron, but sorry Allan, I don't think you can compare the Beethoven's, Mozarts etc with this. They were not 'a band'. They composed music to be played by anyone who wanted to. IMO obviously
