Now look what you started Joan..

well, in Catalonia and also in Spain there are lots of cover bands. They are "useful" when you want to listen to some songs from bands you'll never have the chance to see them live.
You have all cover bands possible: Sultans of swing, Sinchronicity, Abbey Road, Smoking Stones, The Bon Scott band, etc.
You know they won't be as good as the originals but hey you sometimes get a surprise. You know their singing in english will be a bit poor -or just a shame- because they are not british. The point is just to have some fun.
The best ones have their own records in the market, always with songs from the bands they imitate and sometimes they add some songs from their own.
That's all. Here you have some of the bands:

Abbey Road http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I9b7YSp-J8

The Bon Scott Band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnQcyGFBZiQ

Smoking Stones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_oB1WV0iq0

Sultans of swing (example of good guitar and poor english) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFs8BxqPd2w

Australian Pink Floyd is one of the best examples to know the cover bands are possible and can be very good. You have another example here in UK: The Straits,
a band formed by original Dire Straits members (keyboardist Alan Clark, guitarist Phil Palmer, saxo Chris White and others)
They will play in Cardiff on 9th october. Terry Williams will be there...in the audience.

With Man we would have a problem: there is no chance to have another Micky. His guitar and his voice are inimitable. And it's impossible to recreate these jams. So I don't know what can we do...

With the new Man with Martin and Deke I see another big problem: the age. I think it's time for Martin and Deke retirement. I saw some of the Deke 2010 videos and....what can I say....he's already too old, it's a pity but he can't sing nor play like before. The same for Martin and Terry. I think they can't play anymore. We need some new blood like George and Bob. They are the solution.

I do struggle with the idea of a tribute band putting out a CD of songs by the band they are "tributing".   And if they throw in their own songs when do they stop being a tribute band?

On such philosophical excursions does the future of the world depend.

I've seen the Muffin Men loads of times. Not sure whether I should be feeling guilty or not.

Saw that Rory Gallagher tribute act a couple or so years ago. Some bird took me, definitely not my choice. I definitely feel guilty about seeing Rory Gallagher, awful. Don't feel that much better about the bird as well. Not a good  evening at all.

...there is a thing here in new york we have at an east side bar called "copycat" night.you pick a band, get a couple of groups together and cover their songs.it's great fun.i 've asked the booker already about a "Man" one.i think maybe if combined with Badfinger it'll happen sometime...at present there are no Man songs in our groups set,but i am going to work up a version of Something's happening in the future when the band gets more rehearsal time...another idea i have is to do a full concert at our sunday night residency down the block;two sets playing all the songs our group knows how to play.that would include Bananas,American Mother, and 7171 551...in indian music, ragas are passed down through generations.i believe in exploring these songs in a similar fashion through space and time.it's also important to dj some of the original records(which i do every sunday these days) ...my personal opinion on seeing Deke was that he was great.and Terry "murdered" it(around here that means he played very very well :) ) when i saw him play.he was as they say in brooklyn "off the chain".i saw and heard it with my own two eyes.that being said he told me before he played that he was retired...i've heard some of the rehearsal for the present incarnation of Man and musically speaking,i'd like to hear it live.if i had the bread i'd be there on the 1st, especially with Deke sitting in for potentially 14 songs! + i could inquire after the book...i agree with Gavin about being able to express your opinion.the catch 22 is that someone else can too; even if just to say "shut up"( which is not what im saying)...by the way before i met you Gavin i pictured you as a man older then my self with very short hair. but when i met you were younger and your hair was long and wavy...i digress... since significant time has passed since the break up;as a fan looking at and digging on the history of Man,i like to go back to thinking about(along with anything and everything else in its proper perspective)the fun things i read about Martin in Deke's book or hearing about the heroic act that inspired "Romain". i like to think about things like him being a Ken Kesey type figure a little bit with some serious history behind him...i think he can still play.Micky wouldn't have played with any of these guys if they couldn't play.and i think Phil is musically great, his taste in music is awesome, and he takes time to communicate with his fans.i've never met him in person.but it's on my "to do" list to see him play...George(cheers love and peace) is awesome with Man,and in his own right too. Bob is fantastic and the friendliest of people. what i'm trying to say is i hope people with all different perspectives on the board can accept my holistic outlook on this matter and that as a fan i hope we could all make up sometime, even by this Christmas...peace and cheers...

No doubt it won't be the last time I say this - take a look at Dr Feelgood.  They have become a virtual tribute band of themselves, and their loyal following have forgiven the axing of Wilko and the death of Lee, and just get out there once a twice a year to enjoy a band containing no hero's but a lot of energy and a lot of happy memories.

Significantly their website doesn't have a messageboard

Sorry Gav, missed your questions on prev age. Answers follow...

1. How many punters are they expecting on Saturday? Its a big old place if the addition of Deke doesnt pull a few punters in?
I suspect it will be the faithful few. But I am prepared to be surprised. Hope Deke makes his petrol money!

2. Have Deke, Ace, Ryan and the indie kids actually given the audience the respect and courtesy of rehearsing together for this gig, or are they just going to be winging it as usual?
Apparently they have been rehearsing for a week in Kingston! Deke, as could be predicted, declined to attend and is doing his homework in Chester. But then see above...

3. Is Deke's book going to be available on Saturday, because if it is I might just come along to the show and buy one?
Wish it was, but 'circumstances' have delayed it. You will hear here first when it progresses. Totally my fault. But if you come anyway I'll happily buy you a pint and explain further.

4. How on earth can Rob W think I've mellowed?
Pass!

Lovely to hear from you Davey, after a long time.  My son has been in America for the last two weeks so no doubt you bumped into each other.

I have to agree with you about Deke - it was fairly clear that Taff was taking the lead guitar role, but it was still a Deke show.

What does the word 'mellow mean'?  I thought it was the title of a John Kongos song.

Yep. Leamington is a big old place.Probably holds 8 hundred or so, but the acoustics are great(just right for some huge solo's) Good bar area and not massively overpriced.Hope you all have a great night.

I saw The Dylan Project this year and have to say they were superb! Nothing wrong with Tribute bands. Take the LSO for example.
