Geeky help - memory sticks
« on: April 27, 2012, 01:48:51 AM »
I've got an 8GB memory stick.    With only one MP3 file on it the attached shows as my available space.

What's happening with the 5.10GB?   Is there anyway to recover this?   I suspect it might be some residue from files that have previously been on there are deleted (it is, after all, only a transient medium) but am struggling.    I did do a defrag but that made no difference

Any assistance welcome

..you didn't tell us it's a 28 hour version of C'mon/spunkrock/bananas/many are called..

..it's a memory stick. If it's anything like my.. like my.. like my.. Oh I give up..

Try copying the mp3 to your hard drive - What size is it there? Does the mp3 play? Is it corrupted? What size is the mp3?..

Mp3 is miniscule - it's the new Beach Boys single.  Should hardly make a dent on the stick.

Interestingly, when I attach it to the USB input on my Brennan JB7 it recognises 112 files although there was only the one present on it in any playable shape.  Kind of suggests the space is made up of former activity.

If 112 files are seen the Brennan, they may be hidden in Windows. Try right clicking on the device and somewhere I think it lets you include/exclude hidden or read only files.

But beware - it probably needs some of those hidden files

Love the post. All the technical mumbo jumbo cr*p which whooshes right over my head, and Pete T beautifully brings it down to earth. Is this what is known as 'pathos'?

Thanks all, reformatting has recovered the space for me.   Copied over some files to the stick and transferred to the Brennan just to show that it's worked and it's all in order.

Had thought about reformatting early on but could not for the life of me find where I could do this but it's only available as a right click option when you  look at "My Computer" and not through any other views of the drive.  Which is either a sensible thing to do to keep what might be a dangerous options out of harm's way, or horribly difficult to find depending on your viewpoint.

Rob, your karma reminds me of that famous Scottish scoreline:
