RIP Bassist Donald 'Duck' Dunn - 13 May 2012

Steve Cropper Tweeted: Duck Dunn died peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club.

Dunn was the original bassist with Booker T and the MGs and one of the most active session bassists of the last 40 years.

..back  in my youth, a couple of years ago, there were two groups in the youth club fighting over the record player. I was in the group that wanted to play man, purple, floyd etc. while the other group wanted to play motown, soul, reggae, and all that shite.

I now feel as I've missed out a bit as some of it is quite good.. Oh well..

Pedantic point - Duck Dunn wasn't the original bassist in the MG's.   That was Lewie Steinberg.   Dunn took over from him in 1965.

I'd agree with that. I spent a pleasant day drinking Rebellion IPA and listening to 80s 'pop' acts at the weekend. Not enough guitar for my liking but excellent musicians with special mention to the keys and bass. Suddenly, I even enjoyed Billy Ocean.

There's an obit in The grauniad here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/may/13/donald-duck-dunn-dead-tokyo although the Grauniad wouldn't be the Grauniad if it didn't refer to 'Steve Crooper' at one point.

The thing I admired most about DDD was that he could play the funkiest grooviest bass lines without them being over complicated or unnecessarily punctuated by what sounds like sets of bed springs being twanged at the end of every 8/16/24/32 bars. You didn't really notice him, just the overall effect of which his contribution was immense.
