Spam Links

I've noticed that some sites have words with a double underline linky thing for advertising purposes, mainly for an I Pad whatever that is. It now seems to be happening on the Man Forum.

As this is an otherwise sacred and hallowed area reserved for our quiet and considered contemplations, I wondered if there is an option of blocking these?

I've seen this on other forums (most notably the MTWA one) but haven't encountered any on here to date.

Perhaps I imagined it on the Forum....it certainly happens on the Archive, I tried and failed to attach an example from Man - Compilations where the words 'product' 'collections' and 'members' were affected...but when I re-looked, they were back to plain text.

(Have subsequently sent screen pic via email to JG and AH)

I've had a browse around the Archive at both home and in the office and can't find any occurence of this.  Suggests to me (as a non-techie) that this is something on your desktop that's causing this.   Do you have any other devices to check on?

As for the techie side of things, I'll leave that to the redoubtable Mr Gough as I only know enough to be dangerous.

I've just tried it in the library and it was ok, so in view of your suggestion I've had a think. I'll be alright in a minute. As it happens I added Freecorder 6 to my typewriter thingy the other day and other odd things have happened since...such as my interweb home page mysteriously becoming MSN rather than Virgin as expected, plus when I click on some of the sites on my favourites bar it takes me to the Google Search page rather than directly to the intended site. Bearing in mind I don't know what the feck I'm talking about, is Freecorder the likely culprit? It's a rather handy facility to have, so if it is the cause of these shenanigans is there a way of keeping it but not so that it results in the problems I'm experiencing?

This.

Chances are, somewhere in the tiny print of the T&C was a statement that you agreed to install other helper applications.

This has been recorded on the 45cat site too. This is what someone answered:

This is a browser extension called "I want this" In Explorer, go to tools, manage add ons, toolbars and extentions and disable the "I want this" extension. In Google chrome click on the spanner icon, top right of page go to tools and go through the same process. After you have done this restart your browser and it should be gone. Then go to your control panel and remove/un-install the program " I Want This"

Hope it helps.

Well there I was happily (?) recording 'The Live Adventures Of Man' off Spotify with Freecorder 6 (appalling behaviour I know, think of those royalties which will now not be going to....BZZZT....) and it got horribly stuck. I removed Freecorder by the traditional Control Panel - Add/Remove Programmes route, but the double underlines were still there. Bravely, I then started to follow Martin's advice (I'm on IE) but can't find the 'I want this' extension....

You mean the Romans were trying to download stuff off Spotify? No wonder the empire crumbled.

The Man Forum. Doesn't do what it says on the tin.

Sounds like something else then. The underlines were not reported...
