I'll be putting a more detailed review up in the Archive when I've got some time to write it, plus probably a few photos of the occasion.

Setlist:

Love Your Life
Something Is Happening
All Alone
Man Of Misery
C'mon
Sudden Life
Many Are Called But Few Get Up
Romain
Shit On The World

Bananas

Around 75-80 people enjoyed the show, so the atmosphere was pretty reasonable. It was the first time I've been to The Musician, and I'm told the stage has been extended a little recently. A very pleasant and friendly venue once inside, but I'll admit to feeling somewhat nervous when trying to locate it. Another of those edge of the city centre locations where the streetlights are mostly out, and the windows boarded up.

The details of the pre-gig Somali take-away with the mystery menu, the frozen fish, cold curry, disappearing fish-cakes and the almost unanimous mass walk-out will have to wait for the full review. No prizes for guessing who was behind the beat during the walk-out though.

In essence it was a very confidently delivered show, which suffered from problems with the sound here and there. I suspect the sound onstage was much worse than front of house, with George and Martin particularly frustrated by the balance. Phil commented later that he couldn't make much out through the monitors, but had really enjoyed himself anyway, despite shredding most of his fingernails in the excitement. Josh was playing through an Epiphone amp top and cabinet I'd not seen before. Very Sixties looking but perhaps, from his observation before the show, more style than substance. Be interesting to see how he gets on with it. Certainly loud enough.

As you can see, the setlist is pretty much the same as was being played on the sprinkling of dates earlier this year. Phil's reclaimed his solo slot during C'mon, great to hear, with George cutting back his contribution just a little.

For me the highlights were Love Your Life, Something Is Happening, Man Of Misery and Sudden Life on this occasion. This largely emphasises that the present line up are very capable of doing justice to material both classic and current, and dancing elegantly across the various stepping stones in between too. I reckon anybody staying away because Micky and Deke are absent, are rather missing the point of what the band are all about.

Gossip regarding the new recordings being made this month and next month indicate that there's a fine collection of candidates for the next album. With the various band members spread across three countries nowadays, I'd venture that more ideas will be springing forth when they get together in the same place at the same time. There's also a possibility that an album launch party might be arranged to co-incide with the re-opening of the Patti Pavilion. Now there's a good idea, but still just a rumour mind.

Special mention to the support band The Last Pedestrians, who made a fine Cajun-influenced noise, and would be well worth catching up with if they're in your neighbourhood.

This was an unfortunate gig, first of all in terms of the sound. The onstage chemistry and professionalism were also a bit lacking. There were so many late entries from the vocalists, not being near the mikes when the vocals were supposed to come in, and being frequently out of tune when they did (shared lead vocals have traditionally been one of the band's greatest assets). A big change from the post-Xmas date at the 100 Club at the end of 2006 which saw the band revitalized and a brilliant Spunk Rock topping off the occasion. After this last live experience, I'm forced to agree with Steve Elsdon's opinion that a Manband without Deke and Micky is barely possible. Josh has the talent but does not seem interested, and is palpably uncomfortable standing next to his dad, and George seems committed, and he's a great guitarist, but vocally not in the same league as his dad. Martin has never been the best singer or songwriter but he always made up for that in spirit when alongside Deke and Micky. It's not really his role to carry the band now. This gig had moments of greatness. Phil and Bob were great but the problems in the band seem to be elsewhere. I think it would be fitting if this was the band's last gig, as historic and chaotic as The Beatles on the roof in '69. We loved their life.

Fair play for having the balls to come out with that, angel easy, given that some band members past do read these board posts and indeed post their own. But it is interesting nevertheless considering that the band has split in two since. That's also two very different opinions on the same gig (and indeed the relevance of the then-current Manband in general) if we now cast our minds back to to Jules

Anybody else go to that one who hasn't posted a review/opinion? Be interesting to see which side it falls on given what happened to the band in the studio (chronologically speaking) afterwards.

Tellingly, most of the problems on the night were related to the guy in charge of the sound, who turned up late, didn't have enough kit to get everything in the mix, and who struggled to get an acceptable sound either in the monitors or front of house.

I do have to agree with Angel Easy's comments on stagecraft though. Some members of the band do occasionally need to be reminded that the audience is in front of the stage. Just like some members of the audience need to be reminded that the band is on the stage.

I didnt go to Leicester but saw the band on 4 occaisions last year. I have to say that although the 2008 line up had moments of absolute brilliance particularly during the 40th anniversary tour, at times the band were very ragged and under-rehearsed.

I think the problem last year was with Martin in Germany, Phil in Denmark and the rest of the band in Wales they were not able to get as much rehearsal as would have been ideal. On the tour the first couple of gigs were reported as poor probably because they were still getting to grips with playing the songs together with the new line up.

With one off gigs such as Leicester the lack of rehearsal and rustiness again often shows.

I think as regards Martins new band that is likely to be a continuing problem with the band split between Wales and Germany. George and Bob's Manband is at least likely to consist mainly of Wales based musicians which may make things easier for rehearsals.

Chester was an excellent gig. Maybe Deke's presence helped but the sound was great for a small venue and the band were quite tight.
Leeds had bad trouble with sound and equipment and, maybe as the gig was being filmed, there were plenty of moments of over-egotistic behaviour. And even though it was later into the tour the lack of rehearsals showed.
IMO.
