That was worth some applause but it would be a shame to spoil the balance

Alan, It's quite a while ago since that visit - mid 80s perhaps but I definitely stayed in a B&B just around the corner from Byers road.  Is there something like a cemetery or a park with railings around it nearby on a 'Main Rd'?

The bridge was probably a short walk away.  I recall me and my mate went into an Italian restaurant on or near the bridge, which was full, hence the burger / kebab / whatever on the aforementioned bridge.  We ended up in some pub with all the walls painted matt black so I guess it was a music pub of sorts.

The reason I remember Byers road is that one of the girls working in the office on Argyll St near the railway station (which last time I was up there had since been converted to a Wetherspoons) told us about the lovely studenty place that was Byers Rd near our B&B.  Maybe things are getting blurred around street names after all this time.  But I can definitely start a story about my visits to Glasgow with 'I was in this seedy pub...' :D

Hey Mike. I think that hole is getting bigger. Might be an idea to stop digging.

I have a road atlas you can borrow if you like. unused since... Hmmm.... When was it? ...

Now I've got me shovel out...

I just Googled it and think I may have stayed at Great Western Rd and ByersRd runs off that.

I'll park me shovel.

Really?  Byres Road is populated with West End Luvvies and students and is a pretty benign part of Glasgow.

Now if you'd been further down the road at Partick Cross.............

Yup. Definitely Byres Rd.  Me and my mate never been so scared in all our lives and between us we've seen some stuff.  A bar with all the foam / scaffold thing going on and bars with not a stick of furniture in them. Either broken or been broken. Assumption was there had been a fight or there was one due.  Genuinely scared.  About 1997.  There was a bridge fairly nearby and we ate a takeaway burger at about the half way point so that we had two options to leg it it if we we were approached.    Bit like Morriston but not as famous :)

Must confess that sounds nothing like Byres Road.  Your mention of  the bridge seems to confirm it for me - Byres Road is someway from the nearest bridge.

I've attached a reasonable view of Byres Road looking southwards for info - does this look in any way like the area you were in?
lOVE THE PIC :D
