Riverside
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:51:41 PM »
Hi all. I haven't posted for some time as Coventry is a bit of a desert as regards gigs go, but it was very remiss of me not to mention a marvellous concert  at Leamington Assembly by Riverside.

A Polish band, maybe a cross between Opeth and Porcupine Tree. Great show, and a decent crowd.Remiss of me because they have left the country already.Anyway, Check them out.

By the way Rob W. Did you check out Diagonal? Any good?

Yes I did akko. Courtesy of Oakers (thanks again), enjoyed the CD, but thought nothing overly special, and reminded me of Mostly Autumn. More I've listened to it, though, more I've enjoyed it. Would love to see them at a gig.

I've seen Riverside twice at their first ever gig in this country at Lydney Town Hall and at Bilston at The Robin 2 supported by the tremendous Pineapple Thief  :)
I must disagree that they sound like Mostly Autumn as I don't really like Mostly Autumn but I really like Riverside!  :o

I think it was Diagonal that Rob was saying sounded like Mostly Autumn.   Not a comparision I'd have thought of, to be honest.

Yes it was and neither would I. But I did, and still do.

Shrine of New Generation Slaves is a stupendous album! Very impressed and will be digging deeper in due course.

Glad you enjoyed it Oakers. I've heard another couple of their albums as well.Second Life Syndrome from 2005 and Rapid Eye Movement from 2007. Both of them rather good.

"Rapid Eye Movement" (The two disc version) is my fave but "Anno Domini High definition" is a close second I haven't had a chance to listen to the new one yet as I'm skint  :(

We haven't talked nearly enough about this band. I'm very conscious of my tendency to get all evangelical when I hear something I really like. I've tried to hold back but it's no use...so there's the 'soap box' warning for those wish to tune out now...or be ready with a giant pinch of salt.
When I began my typically belated foray into the field of contemporary prog' (embarrassingly recently)...I was pleasantly surprised by Porcupine Tree and The Pineapple Thief, very impressed by Steven Wilson's recent stuff and the Lifesigns debut, and blown away by Crippled Black Phoenix.
Riverside's 'New Generation Slaves' however, is not merely 'stupendous,' as per my initial verdict. It is a modern masterpiece. It has been in near uninterrupted play on my car stereo now for three weeks...and my enjoyment is yet to wane by the tiniest degree.
Every note, every lyric, every instrumental, every technological audio effect,  every PP and every FF have been deployed - it seems to me - with optimum craftsmanship. There are more hooks than you'll find in a sizeable curtain shop, tracks that grab you instantly and others that work on you more subtly. I now love each and every one, but oh how I would love to see two in particular - 'Deprived' and the second bonus track 'Night Sessions 2' performed live.
Haven't bought the rest of their stuff yet - it really can't be as good as this one, can it? If it is, that's me sorted indefinitely.
In summary then - I like it a lot, and that man Akko has now acquired God-like status in my eyes. Cannot thank him enough.

Oakers my friend if you are wanting to listen to some more of what is being called post prog you could do worse than have a listen to the US Band, Days Between Stations, Bruce Soord (Pineapple Thief) helped them out on their debut which I have and the second album is just out after five years in the making "In Extremis" with a host of special guests including Rick Wakeman, Pete Banks, Billy Sherwood (Yes) and Colin Moulding (XTC) and Tony Levin, apparently it is second in the Amazon progressive Rock download chart!  :)

Is there no end to these riches? I will add them to my shopping basket, but it may be a few weeks before I can press the 'Order' button. Have just bought two more Riversides and still have a Big Big Train to catch! Thanks Halfamix.

No problem mate, its always nice to hunt out quality sounds  :) May I also recommend the new "Wisdom of Crowds" album although its not out yet (although I have heard some of it) a collaboration between Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief) and Jonas Renkse (Katatonia) there is a big article and a track from it on the free cd in the new issue of Prog (issue 36)  8)

It took just two spins to get me hooked on Second Life Syndrome - guitar much more to the fore on this one.
Rapid Eye Movement took a lot longer. In fact it wasn't until about the seventh rotation on the way into work today, that it registered fully, which is almost certainly a sign that this one will end up being my favourite. Both albums a little darker and heavier than 'Shrine,' but overall I'm still in absolute awe of this band.
Further purchases postponed in deference to Hawkwind and Big Big Train though. Told you I'd get to them eventually Allan! Will let you know my thoughts as soon as I've received and played a few times.
