Recommended Bands
« on: January 18, 2014, 04:46:40 PM »
Can I just recommend Wille and the Bandits as a band to catch live. Saw them again last night in the Jolly Farmer, Newton Abbot for the ridiculously low price of£2 which included a free shot!! For a 3 piece they kick up a real storm and are such accomplished musicians you can't help but be blown away by their live show. Deserve much success but they eschew anything remotely corporate so don't get the credit/coverage they deserve. They are playing dates in and around the South West before touring Germany where they get a lot more support - echoes of the Man band for me. Catch them if you can if they play near you. You won't be disappointed.

Anyone who likes ska and lives down this way i.e. Devon could do worse than take in the Simmertones. Seeing them tomorrow night to kick off the weekend.

If you're down that way, hope you're keeping dry.

And kicking off your weekend you say. Does your weekend include spending Sat pm at Plainmoor?  If so, the away team are now playing some of the best passing football I've witnessed in many a year. Will be well worth your £15 or whatever they charge.

Weather permitting I will be there Rob. We have a new manager who has managed to secure us 2 away wins since taking over so hope springs eternal. Been down in the Conference and don't want to go down again so we need the points a little more than Bury. I seem to remember Bury being in the old Division1 back in the day. Am I correct?

Depends what you mean by the old div 1.

If you mean the first tier, 1926ish was our last season there.

If you mean the 2nd tier, we were there in the 90's. I think it was div 1 then.

I've been to Torquay a few times. Best days were in the 80's whem they ko'd at 7.30pm on a Sat night. Coaches left Gigg 7.00am, arrived mid day. On the beer until ko at 7.30, then on the beer from end of match until leaving Torquay at midnight, arrive back 7.00am. Perfect.

I seem to remember the 7:30 kick offs in Torquay being reasonably frequent.  Anyone know why such an unusual time?

Someone did tell me once and I have forgotten - will make enquiries this afternoon.

I think it was to attract the daytrippers/holidaymakers to watch the match on the evening after spending the day on the beach, in the days when football matches were affordable. Torquay didn't play every Sat at 7.30, mainly early and late season. Prepared to be corrected of course

Halfamix has returned from Frome in Somerset, whew what a trip over on Saturday, most scared I've ever been behind the wheel of my 38 year old car!  ::) What with the wind and rain! The reason for the trip to our flooded Somerset cider drinking cousins was that I was on the guest list for Carl Palmers ELP Legacy my can that boy still play the drums  :) It was a excellent gig with two young guitar prodigies on lead guitar and bass (including a Chapman stick) but no Keyboards!!
We were treated to a wealth of ELP tracks including the never before played Jerusalem and a 20min extract of "Pictures at a Exhibition" a Sky track and a amazing version of "21st Century Schizoid Man" Carl did get out from behind his drums to regale us with tails and stories after every track so all in all a great night and highly recommended. Oh and there are a few tracks on You Tube for anyone that's interested  :)

Sounds good, but what is the link between Palmer and Schizoid Man?

Greg Lake maybe? Anyway, a band I recommended a year or so ago was Howlin Rain and their album "The Russian Wilds". If you go to the Classic Rock website you can listen to "Self Made Man" from their upcoming live cd. Rather splendid!

Got the new Wille and the bandits album 'Grow' last week...and it's terrific. A massive improvment on the last one, and ought to be a game-changer for these guys. Their £2 gig days may be numbered. Note the firm grip on my 'Wille' in this post!
