What's new?
« on: November 10, 2014, 12:16:17 AM »
I've just spent a few days re-organising the Evolution section, activity which has been long overdue.

The navigation menus have been brought up to current standards and the layout of all the pages has also been refreshed.
Two new pages have been added to the Family Jungle, Pete Frame's tree from the much lamented ZIGZAG magazine and the Man family tree trunk from the All's Well That Ends Well insert. The third new page (an interactive Jungle) isn't ready yet, as I'm still trying to get my head around how to actually achieve it!

What this exercise did illustrate is just how much further work needs to be done to bring the history of Man up to date and to complete the band member profiles.

All (polite and constructive) comments and suggestions are welcomed.
Boldly going.......

Review of Man's Half Moon, Putney gig published. Photo gallery attached.
Additional Son of Man and Malcolm Morley dates included in top of page whirly gig thing.
Place-marker added for Son Of Man review from January 20th. I didn't have the camera with me that evening, so if anyone has any photos from the night I'd be glad to hear from you.

For those not interested in the details: I've made a few changes.

For those interested in the details:

The aim for this behind the scenes overhaul was to retain the look and feel, but bring the site code up to a more current standard and make it more consistent.

I've converted all the pages from Latin1 to UTF8 encoding (didn't know the site was written in latin did you?), which should solve all those problems with umlauts and diphthongs. This was effectively the second half of all the database changes I made a few weeks back. There might still be a few pernicious weeds lurking in there, so if you see any let me know and I'll apply the weedkiller.

I've re-vamped the navigation just a little, bringing back buttons for the top level but retaining text for lower levels, where things like album and song titles tend to be too long to fit. This should make the sections a little more consistent as you move around the place.

The Discography section is back to its original title. Lyrics are still in there. Substantial changes have been made to the Memorabilia section, which has allowed me to load many more posters, tickets, flyers and other stuff. Some out-takes from the Rhinos photo shoot have been added too. I really should get round to photographing the t-shirt collection as the Clothing galleries are a bit threadbare right now.

Community and Weblinks has had a clear out, broken links being ruthlessly expunged.

On This Day is now working, with just a limited set of data for the moment. I'll build on this over time.

Oh yes, the track list for the Reanimated Memories review has been resuscitated. Don't know where that went.

For those not interested in the details: I've made a few changes.

Purely out of self-importance I looked for the existing review of 'Crintabulated' and hoped for a review of 'Manipulated'. People still ask me for copies! Found myself in the 'Family And Friends' section but clicking on my name brought me back to the Discography. Also I think there should be articles on the other Man Tribute Albums 'Man We're Glad We Know You' and 'Micky Jones Tribute Album' to complete the Family And Friends Section.

Other than that, well done Jules.
Nationsounds - the label that brought you Shake The Nation and raised £1,500 in memory of Micky...

Good points well made Nick. I'll get those reviews added. Maybe a new discog section, "Inspired by Man"

"Inspired by Man" section added to the Discography. Thanks for the idea Nick. If anyone's aware of other items that should go in here, Man tracks recorded by other artists for example, please give us a shout.

I've also added a date picker to the "On This Day" page, so if you ever wanted to know just exactly what Man were up to on your birthday, now you can.

Pedants corner.... Sir! Sir! Two 1985 gigs missing from the list. JB's Dudley 11th May, General Woolfe Coventry 18th May.
It's all Rob W's fault sir! I saw him do it.

Thanks Prof. All new confirmations of gigs missing from the list are very welcome.

Just a shame that there are sometimes more old ones being re-discovered than there are new ones being arranged.

Piggin ell. What've I done now?  Jeez. Maybe I should've stayed in bed!

Did I do it with a candlestick?  In the conservatory?  Am I Professor Plum?

Latest Archive updates are summarised in the What's New? section, but a highlight is the introduction of the library of The Welsh Connection, which has now reached critical mass. Over the next few weeks we'll be filling in the gaps that remain, but there's plenty available from the magazines, newsletters and digital news-sheets to spark the interest. If you're going in to take a look, be sure to bring your sandwiches and a flask of something suitable, because you may be in there some time  :D
