Richard Treece + Donovan's Brain
« on: March 13, 2016, 10:28:29 PM »
Current side project is sorting out the mountain of tapes in the Brain vault. The next archive release will cover the period from about 94-2000 +/-. That of course includes the Treece years. There is a lot of material that has never been heard, or hard to find. I've mixed three songs so far with Ricky. I taped our rehearsals for the Seattle Terrastock on 16 track. I reckoned this might be a good idea. The tapes sound very good. Richard is playing very well, very relaxed. There are several other songs we just never put out like the elusive Bok The Beer Elf. There may be as much as 3 hours of unreleased material and a some compilation tracks from the Terracope and Dream Mag cds. I don't think we will be releasing this until next year. I don't want to wait too long, but we do have a new album in the works. Richard's sister Jenny has heard a couple of bits and approved the idea. She feels he was not heard enough in the post Helps years. I would have liked to had Richard on the last few Brain albums, but he just couldn't work it out, despite offers from a couple of friends in London to help out.

I also have a few of his home recordings we tried to tart up. I may try again with Ric Parnell, but I honestly don't think there is anything more that can be added. I'll just mix what I have and see what it sounds like. Ken and Malc are also heard on a few of the stray Brain tracks.

Just thought you might want to know. Carry on.

since the last time I wrote, I've made some good progress on the new mixes. The song I'm working on now has FOUR tracks of Richard's guitar. I've worked up one mix, and think I'll do another with just the slide track, which I've not used on this mix. I feel pretty lucky to have spent time working with Ricky, Ken and Malc. Watching them create was a pleasure. I don't think we had the luxury of so many tracks when I did Call Down The Moon. I would like to revisit those tapes to see what else there might be.

It'll be out this time next year. There is a lot of material to be mixed and one or two songs to finish. There will be a nice booklet, so photos need to be sorted. Richard's sister has agreed to write something and might be able to supply some photos.

I've been working on this Brain Treece archive project now pretty much non-stop. The list of songs has grown, though it's multiple versions of the jam songs. Richard had a completely different approach every time we played them. There is the complete 9 song Terrastock set, plus five more alt versions. Another ten or so songs as well. The balance of the material is from various Brain line ups, some film music and maybe some of the krautrock thing Jeff and I did one night....Well over 3 hours of material, and two hours is with Treece. don't say I didn't warn you.

It's been a real joy mixing this material. I'd just put the rehearsal tapes on the shelf, and never really listened to them until now. Flippin' 'eck as Ricky would say. There was one song that did have me in  tears. He is just on fire and reaching for the outer edge

Re: Richard Treece + Donovan's Brain Box Set Track List
« Reply #8 on: November 20, 2016, 02:16:45 PM »
Box Box Set Track List should look something like this. 46 songs total. 35 have never been released. The remaining eleven will be remixed for this set. Some of those are more than just fresh mixes and are radically different from the released versions. The three songs which appear more than once, are very different performances and all feature Richard Treece. There are eight film soundtrack pieces as well.

end of summer 2017. 23 of the songs are with Richard. Malc and Ken are also hears as are Deniz Tek and Dave Walker. I still have 8 songs to mix, then I can start on the liner notes and package. There are loads of photos to be sorted out too. Its a massive project, four hours of music, so best to take my time to get it right. The cover image taken by Richard Booth is killer.

I'm now working on Richard's Brave New Girl. Amazing that this never was completed. I've done some work on it this weekend and will now had it over to Tom Stevens to add a final bass part. Richard wrote new words for the unused Helps song Brave New World. Dave Walkers sings, though I may try to add in some of Ricky's guide vocal. The real trick is sorting out the SEVEN guitar tracks Treece laid down.

I'm going as fast as I can. This was the one song which needed work. I think it's now coming together. I had to save it for the last as I didn't want to lose the momentum with the mixing.
