And another thing. Autotune vocalists. If you can't sing in tune, don't be the singer in the band. I rehearsed for many months with a Jamiroquai tribute band, in which the singer couldn't sing. In desperation we got him an autotune gizmo, but he was so far out of tune that the gizmo pulled him further out, assuming he was aiming for a different note altogether. In despair, we walked out on him eventually. Turned otu we were the second line-up to do so; and he promptly recruited a third. I had to admire his persistence. I think he ended up doing gigs to backing tapes which were like karaoke plus, with a strong vocal line included. Again, what's the point?

My concert-going buddy and I went to see guitar legend Albert Lee at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley a few years back.  We had been on a kick to get out to see as many shows as we could, as long as anyone of interest was coming around and playing at a club or small venue – no more huge concerts for us.  Saw many greats that year, including several who have since passed away (Johnny Winter, Leon Russell, Merle Haggard).

The Sweetwater usually has small tables with chairs on the floor.  For this gig, they cleared the floor for standing-room only.  Before the show, an annoying security dude took the mic and barked out orders of behavior – move in to make space, don’t lean on the handrails, no sitting on the steps, etc.  The average age of the crowd was 50+, but it felt like we were being prepped for a junior high assembly.

Albert Lee was great, but it was just too crowded and unpleasant.  I only made it through about halfway before my feet started killing me.  I told my buddy that I was heading outside, but he’d had enough, too.  That was the only gig I’d ever walked out on.  Sorry, Albert!

Got to be honest, Brian, and say I felt the same thing at Micky's Jam a few years ago. The heat was stiffling, the bands were deafening, and attendance was so good that there was nowhere to sit down. Deke felt the same too and grabbed a seat near me as soon as it became vacant! I walked out to get some fresh air. But I did come back in!

Left quite a few in the 70's but mostly bands I was not too familiar with and going to a gig on a Saturday and/or Sunday was the "thing" to do.

A couple of (dis)honourable mentions:

Frupp - about 1974. Boring and not particularly original

Sparks - 1973. I was told they were progressive and interesting. They turned up an hour and a half late and were just boring. If I recall correctly I went home after 30 mins and watched Match Of The Day

Be-Bop-Deluxe - The first lineup (Axe Victim). I had heard the album and thought it was okay, but live it was complete shite. However I saw them later after Futurama came out (under protest I must add). Virtually different line up and a completely different band and so much better.

Finally - The Men They Couldn't Hang in the later 80's or early 90's - however this was due to a dodgy curry and inadequate facilities and nothing to do with TMTCH!

Now there's another thread - gigs you had to leave owing to circumstances beyond your control :(

PS - by the way Pete C - as a Southend lad I'm can't place the Red Lion. I'll have to check with my brother.

Mannerisms' lists of early 1970s gigs are rather sparse - Having checked up to the end of 1975 I could only find:-
- Queens Hotel, Westcliffe on Sea - 19 Nov '72 + 18 Feb '73
- Southend Kursaal - 12 Oct '73, 27 Oct '73, 26 Oct '74 + 10 May '75
I assume it was Queens Hotel, Westcliffe on Sea - an over-ornate wedding cake of a building, which definitely hosted Genesis, as seen here - http://www.southendpunk.com/html/queensho.html before becoming a punk venue.
No-one is likely to have forgotten the Kursaal (getting soaked indoors due to the leaky roof, trying to get Terry out of the bar, through the audience, onto the stage etc}

Thanks

I did have a chat with my Brother and the only Red Lion we could come up with is (maybe was - long time since I've been there) in Great Wakering.

We decided that The Queens Ballroom was the most likely venue. It was a run down hotel and like a lot of older Hotel's in the Southend area could not take guests because of the state of the building so a local business man, Jon Paul, promoted gigs there on a Sunday for so called "B list" bands.

But there were some corkers. I saw Focus there when they broke after the OGWT appearance and it was around the time of my 16th birthday. There were many regulars such as Stray, Groundhogs etc.

The Kursaal, also promoted by Jon Paul was the usual Saturday night venue for the "A list" bands. A few bands did get the promotion from the Queens to the Kursaal and Man was one of them, as were Focus. Unfortunately by the time Focus made the Kursaal Ackerman had departed and Phillips Catherine had joined - great jazz guitarist but just did not fit Focus as all.

This has invoked a few memories, saw ELO with Roy Wood at the Queens though as far as I can recall they never played the Kursaal. Steely Dan were scheduled for the Kursaal in 1972 but had to pull out.

And aside from the leaky roof, there was the sprung dance floor which always needed repairing after Status Quo had been in town!!!

...the bands were deafening...

Yes, I definitely think SOM play far too loud. At that volume the differences between the two guitars are completely lost.
Nationsounds - the label that brought you Shake The Nation and raised £1,500 in memory of Micky...

Ditto.

Much gets lost when the music is too loud and it all becomes blurred. Good musicians should be heard, and they don't need to have the volume ramped up to hide inefficiencies as lesser bands do
