Malcolm Morley - The Plough - 27 February
« on: February 28, 2009, 01:12:41 PM »
Ladies and Action Men

My report of last night's proceedings. I'd like to be brief and concise, but then there's lots of things we'd like. This will no doubt be extended by contributions from Tony and Nick R in due course, but you're getting my bit first as the electricity supply currently (ha!) pulsating within Unstately Nationsounds Manor is keen and leaping fresh.

Before the show, Malcolm was chatty, amiable and anxious. So fairly normal pre-gig behaviour then. I suggested he should leave that sort of stuff to me, because I could add blind panic as well.  Familiar persons, apart from the aforementioned Tony and Nick R, were Gina, Richard Treece and Ken Whaley. We all sat about 3 inches away from the stage, ready to pounce should he not look anxious enough. Besides, we like to see artists suffer, particularly sensitive ones.

Malcolm was ably accompanied on stage by Hope Grant, who also appears on MM's 'Aliens' CD. The venue itself is a room attached to The Plough in Walthamstow. The attendance was about 50 people which was a comfortable, cosy and intimate number, allowing Richard and I to swap seats and cause the greatest amount of inconvenience and moral breakdown as we did so. Hurrah!

For equipment fans, Malcolm played Acoustic and Spanish guitars and a Roland SW8 keyboard to provide traditional keyboard sounds, whilst Hope had an Ensonic EPS16 which provided the backings. This does not mean, however, that they were about to turn into Depeche Mode.

They started with Jerry Reed's 'Big Boss Man'. Malcolm played the Spanish guitar and sang. We edged half an inch closer and that seemed to do the trick. The atmosphere was friendly and enthusiastic, we were off. Sorry, they were off. Second was 'Loving Yourself' which I think is a Hope original. He took the vocals on this and it was quickly apparent how good a combination they are, particularly from the vocal point of view.

Tasteful pseudo-accordion was apparent from one of the two keyboards during the third number,  JJ  Cales 'Magnolia', but I couldn't actually see who was responsible. However, the short list is down to two. This was sung by Malcolm. Next was Oscar Brown's 'Afro Blue' which Malcolm had previously performed with Alex Gray.

This was followed by Paul Weller's 'Broken Stones' which Hope sang whilst Malcolm switched to keyboards. 'Naked As The Night', from 'Lost And Found' was next, with Malcolm playing his Acoustic Guitar for the first time. He switched back to keyboards for Hope's 'We Don't Want Your Kind' and back to Spanish for the final song from the first set, Tim Hardin's 'Hang On To A Dream'.

I have to say that Malcolm's enthusiasm for the guitar has skyrocketed since he started using the Spanish ? there was no holding him during some of those solos, I think I might have cracked Tony's ribs at one point elbowing him with my boyish enthusiasm.

I'd better hand over to the others for part 2.....and I believe we have photographic evidence to follow in due course... meanwhile, thanks to Malcolm and Hope for the entertainment, it really was a pleasure to see him/them, the atmosphere was great and I fully expect all of you to be there next time. I'm not the sort of person to insist, but I insist!

Nick,
Thanks for that, will try and attend sometime soon. As Gina pointed out this morning, would have been the ideal opportunity to trek sooth again, with the Ray playing the same venue on Tuesday. Hopefully you'll make that as well.. Think you'll find the audience somewhat reduced..

Here's the first of Tony's pics from the gig. On the left is our Malcolm, on the right is Hope Grant. Log On to view, Click to enlarge.

Question 1: Jules/anyone - is there any way pics can be put up that can be seen without having to log on, thereby viewable by all?
Question 2: Does anybody else think that the Live Reviews section is a bit lost out here by itself? It's certainly not so apparent that a new message has been added....

Done. No change to the way pictures are loaded (Can't have just anyone loading just anything now can we?), but view permissions have been granted to Guests as well as members.

Oh alright then. ::)
Boldly going.......

And now, thanks to Jules, pics are viewable by all! Here is Malcolm in keyboard action.

Now I know you all like your Hammond Organs and Fender Rhodes and traditional fare...well, this is one of those new fangled digital jobbies. But fear not -  he only used the more acoustic sounds such as a piano, rather than plinky plink 2D music that one hears so much about these days.

If you've only heard him on Man stuff, you will be surprised how fluid and soulful his keyboard playing really is. Not zippy and attacking like Phil Ryan, but nevertheless groovy baby. Fortunately that piano thing he used in Man was nowhere in sight...

There is more Morley, surely? Yes.

I've always thought that Aliens is far and away the most adventurous recording any of them have ever done post-Man. Stunning piece of work.

Yes, Pete T - a meet up would be good.

Now looking doubtful for the Ray, however - I seem to be coming down with something thoroughly ghastly. I put it down to having had to use the Victoria Line to get to Walthamstow the other day. Regular users obviously build up immunity, the rest of us end up with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. I don't think Ken and Co (Kenco! ha!) would appreciate picking up my germs as I snog them all in artistic appreciation.

Definitely. Thoroughly recommended and not because it sounds like Man (or indeed Help Yourself). And a good mix! Have a look at MM's site here: http://www.malcolm-morley.com/now/index.htm

Today's pic shows Malcolm's gear - the Acoustic and Spanish guitars, the SW8, Bose Amplification, but more interestingly the Midi Digital Interface Non-Linear Red Beer Crate which seemed to add so much. Built for the live environment, these can withstand all the rigours of the road and still maintain concert pitch. Expect full details about this in Rob's 'Top Gear' section in the next 'TWC'.

By the way - anyone who needs a copy of 'Aliens' for a fiver please contact me. I bought a few boxes to show support when Malcolm was launching it and still have one left - I could use the room!  ;D

Well there we are then! Get cracking!

Most of you will recognise the two characters in this photo...for those who don't, it's Richard Treece and Ken Whaley, both of whom were in Help Yourself with Malcolm before Ken and Malcolm joined Man. They have also been utilised within an Iceberg capacity. They now play with The Green Ray who I didn't get to see last night as my temperature had climbed to approx 120 degrees. True story.

...Good idea. Ohh no, it hurts when I do that. Instead, I am on cups of hot lemon with dollops of honey plus herbal remedies. Seems to be easing up giggle knrk, I mean cough, suffer, etc.

In the next pic our heroes are joined on stage by Tony, who you will know from Effigy Music. Note impressive cowboy shirt. Not sure who took this, possibly Nick R.

...and finally the moment you've all been waiting for!

By this time Gina could take the pressure no more and needed to get a pic of three hard bastards in the audience. Well let's face it...there's none harder than these three. Probably.

In this example of heaving testosterone, I am ably flanked by Tony (same shirt, note) and Professor Nick R of this parish.

I mean really....If there was ever a group of people who could justifiably call themselves 'Man'.....then this is it. Surely.

Fidget....
