Lockdown Contemplation
« on: December 30, 2020, 06:35:19 AM »
In the midst of lockdown, I've been "playing" ultimate line ups with a couple of mates. So to generate some discussions I invite your contributions?

There are three categories:
1) Ultimate Progressive Rock Band line up (persons dead or alive)
2) Ultimate all female line up (Persons dead or alive)
3) Rock'n'Roll heaven line up (Passed on).

BUT there are rules
1 - must be at least a 5 piece (Drums, Bass a must, others at discretion)
2 - Only one per band.
3 - Must be balanced and work as a unit. Songwriters a bonus.

Just for fun.

Hi Tel. This is my effort. Frankly, I looked at Google, not to give me a name, but to be a jogger at 1.30am. I genuinely had to know and be aware of the artiste and be a genuine 'favourite'. I did throw in the female drummer as a curve ball though.

Best Prog Rock Band? Depends how you define prog rock. I'll take it as any band who I know to have at least one track lasting at least 10mins and is self indulgent twaddle 😁
Bass Geddy Lee - Rush
Guitar  Richie Blackmore - DP
Vocals   Ronnie James Dio - Dio
Keys  Phil Ryan - Piblokto! ( no Man number is self indulgent twaddle!! Well apart from H Samuel 😂
Drums Guy Evans - VDGG

Best female band
Bass Tina Weymouth - Talking Heads
Guitar Joan Jett - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Vocals Sally Carr - Middle Of The Road - well it just has to be
Keys Alana Haim - Haim. All of the sisters could be in this band. They are fabulous
Drums Karen Carpenter - The Carpenters. Oh yes she did!

RnR Heaven
Bass John Entwistle - Who
Guitar  MJ - On account of H Samuel
Vocals Don Van Vliet - The Captain
Keys Jon Lord - DP
Drums Neil Peart - Rush

Hi Rob

It gets interesting. You have to assume they are all at the top of their game.

Prog band
Drums - Bill Bruford
Bass - Geddy Lee
Keys - Keith Emerson
Guitar - Jeff Beck
Vocals - Peter Gabriel

Female
Drums - Alice de Buhr
Bass - Tal Wilkenfield
Keys - Rachel Flowers
Guitar - Nancy Wilson
2nd Guitar (sorry couldn't chose) - Lita Ford
Vocals - Maggie Bell

Heaven
Drums - Cozy Powell
Bass - John Entwhistle
Keys - Ken Hensley (Also second guitar)
Guitar - MJ (who else!)
Vocals - Robert Palmer

Try and fit in Bob Fripp with out anybody else who has been in King Crimson  ;D

At risk of a severe case of name dropping, spoke with Ken Hensley in the 70's when he ran his own racing team. I didn't say one of the most disappointing gigs I'd ever seen was Uriah Heep in Mcr 😁

Was that with or post Byron (I met Ken as well but I raise you Ken Hensley, John Wetton and Bryan Ferry at the same time  ;D)

Heep usually cooked on stage and Byron was a great front man. Mind you if you hadn't selected Jon Lord for keys, I would have and gone with Lee Kerslake on drums.

I lost interest after Byron left and thought they had a succession of so so singers, but their last three albums are very good and worth checking out for any heavy rock aficionados. The new drummer and bass player seem to have given them a new lease of life.

By the way Karen Carpenter was a very good drummer. She even beat John Bonham in one poll in the 1970's - mind you it was in Playboy.
