Captain beyond
« on: February 26, 2021, 10:14:49 PM »
Just a quick question, are any of you familiar with captain beyond? I know that there is a thread from 2016 here on them but would like to know what you all think? They are the other band I always listen to and is in my top two bands list (the other band being man). They rose from the ashes of deep purple with Rod Evans on vocals, iron butterfly with Larry rhino Reinhardt on guitar and Lee Dorman on bass  and Johnny winter with bobby caldwell filling in the drum spot. Rhino is the other guitarist I listen to a lot besides Micky Jones and blows my mind in the same way. The first album is a real corker in terms of great drumming, vocals, bass and guitar playing. Some of the best stratocaster through a marshall/fuzz  tones I've  heard besides hendrix.

Yeah I like the first album but then lost track.
Nationsounds - the label that brought you Shake The Nation and raised £1,500 in memory of Micky...

Great band. The first album with songs like I can't feel nothing and dancing madly backwards are phenomenal. Unfortunately Bobby Caldwell and Rhino (Larry Reinhardt) the drummer and guitarist had some musical differences and bobby wanted to keep doing the more hard progressive rock sound but eventually it ended with Bobby leaving and joining rick derringer and the rest of the band put out Sufficiently Breathless. Great album with some really good songs but with the more Latin influences and cleaner guitar sounds, it did not sound really like captain beyond (Santana and Doobie Brothers come to mind). Eventually bobby returned and they were writing the next album. There was a bootleg from this period which was live at Arlington university which had the original lineup Unfortunately rhino's guitar sounds pretty bad and anemic since he was having problems with his amp. Unfortunately the band folded with Rod Evans called quits. They reformed in 1976 with a few different singers and released an album called dawn explosion that unfortunately did not do too well(released at the height of disco and punk).
