Man band guilty pleasures/underrated songs
« on: May 18, 2021, 06:29:15 AM »
Since most people are primarily into man for the progressive aspect (myself included). I wonder if there are some songs by the man band that are more classic rock or kind of cheesy but are somewhat enjoyable. Any songs?

The atypical Manillo (from DYLIHN, remastered on Keep On Crinting), everything about it is great.... the long long wandering lead guitar line, the rhythm guitar, the piano, the organ. The version on Undrugged is really good too, but it doesn't have the organ part, and the lead guitar is shorter & not as good.

They played it live a lot between '85 & '14 too. None of those have made enough of an impression for me to remember them  :(

Manillo is a great track and as much as I like the version on do you like it here now I think the guitar sound is much better on the version on undrugged. I know micky played his sg on the do you like it here version but on the undrugged session he used his 1961 strat. As for guilty pleasures I really like some of the unreleased stuff such as A name and a number,TV dinners,Breaking up once again and last birthday party on rare man.

I always had a soft spot for "Daughter of the Fireplace" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwzKLowdOxs and saw Charles Shaar Murray https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Shaar_Murray play harmonica on it at the Dagenham Roundhouse in August 1974 - strangely enough NME gave the gig a good review

My darlin' lives in Tennesee
Way across the sea
And though she's just a country girl
She's got a lot of lovin' just for me
Boldly going.......

Daughter of the fire place was the song that got me into man right after I saw the april 71 beat club performance. I even like rainbow eyes even if its a little cheesy. I dig some of their country songs

Ok ,so doubtless I will get criticized but I love "Stuck Behind the Popemobile" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cEuwx1juMY.
Shock horror,a song with Martin Ace on lead vocal--bound to be a few unfavourable comments.
Here are a few words which I found on the net about this tune
"Stuck Behind the Popemobile is not as bad as the title suggests and has quite a nice arpeggio guitar line ".
I don't know what arpeggio guitar means

No criticism from me. I've long defended Popemobile. And yes, I love the guitar and will have to take Jules' word  for the pegs on the end. A few naff lyrics but hey ho, it wouldn't be a Martin Ace song otherwise  ;)  ;D

Talking of Jules, my song of note was going to be Country Girl, until Working Clothes sprang to mind and just nicked it at the last corner ( Woodcote back in the day - one for Ollie if reading this)

I dig popemobile as well. I dig the opening guitar riff and Micky's solo is really off the hook. As for martin's vocals even though he doesn't stand out compared to Micky/deke he's got some good vocal moments. Love his vocals on even visionaries go blind on the marquee gig in 1983.

Visionaries is probably Martin's finest song for the band.

Or is it Manillo?

Or is it Popemobile?

Or Miss Kathy?

Agree it's definitely one of his best efforts. It's too bad there is not a studio version of it although we had some good live versions.

Walrus is a my standout Martin Ace song, by a long way. Great tune and some great wordplay in the lyrics.
