Man Apollo Theatre Glasgow with John Cipollina May 14,1975
« on: June 16, 2021, 05:29:33 PM »
Hi! I was just surfing around youtube looking for a man video and I managed to come across this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caxdN7FYE78http://

It's a man gig from when they toured around the UK with John cipollina during the maximum darkness era. As far as I know, this particular gig was released on a CDR but I haven't seen a copy for sale. Unfortunately, the sound quality is horrendous and many of the songs such as 7171 551 and the storm are incomplete but hey at least it's for free on youtube, and it's another gig from the john cipollina tour besides the excellent maximum darkness.

This is very interesting. I have a CD of the Man/Cippo gig recorded in Manchester. It's the same as this!

I was at the Mcr gig. When listening to the CD, I didn't recall the audience being chastised after The Storm, but being 40+ years since, I reckoned I probably just didn't recall it. Now I wonder if my CD is not Mcr, or whether this is not Glasgow. Since acquiring the CD, I believe the Mcr gig is available on a CD. I wonder if our Scottish contingent on here recall anything about the Glasgow gig, though he'll probably say if you were around in the 70's, you won't remember it 😉

Unfortunately I can't say that I've been around since i'm 18  ;D. I will say though that it seemed like a pretty good gig and cipollina and micky were on point. Its great to hear another version of codine although deke's vocals are not as good as the maximum darkness version. Still anything man related is good and its good to hear razorblade and rattle snake by man. Btw with the cdr where did you buy your copy? I only found out about it through the john cipollina website but I don't know where to buy it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

i forgot I have the manchester gig on cd too! Was it on the dodgy live adventures 7 cd boxset by floating records? I have that boxset and while I'm glad i have access to the gigs there, its not worth your time and money.

The CD was given to me well before it appeared publicly. Means a lot to me because it was one of my first Man gigs and I went with College friends. I say " means a lot". It will probably be amended to "meant a lot" if it transpires it wasn't Manchester.

Must have been a fantastic memory. Makes me wish I was alive then since they are one of my favorite bands. The band was playing great. I found about the cdr through this website

I will say Cipollina was really a guitarist with his own voice. Love quicksilver as well. Downloaded the video just in case of martin ace's copy right 8)

Definitely better than my college life. Speaking of bootlegs I know martin ace prohibits the sharing of man bootlegs but is there a way i can get ahold of the bootlegs such as the ones from 1970 in germany? Thanks!

I may be getting on a bit and have lost some of my faculties in the process, but I agree with Rob - this is Manchester. The Glasgow recording starts off with the end of the long drone that preceded '7171' and is not as good sound quality.

As Fonz said, 'I could be wro..wro...wrrrrrong....'
Nationsounds - the label that brought you Shake The Nation and raised £1,500 in memory of Micky...

Fair enough. Was this gig also part of the live adventures boxset? Because i recognize the incomplete version from the manchester cd. Wasn't the gig radio broadcast or was it just a cassette recorder?

As I write this I'm listening to Marc Riley on R6. The relevance being, a while back he mentioned on his programme how as a young kid then, he smuggled himself into the Man/Cippo Mcr gig and fell asleep during one of the songs. I suspect it was The Storm (note to Jules. Sorry, I know I have mentioned this before. It's a sign of old age when repeating oneself... continually 😁)

Wouldn't be surprised.  ;D Since the storm is such a dreamy soundscape, it's the song I listen to before I go to bed since its ambiance puts you to sleep. It's either the studio version, the version from the gugenhalle in 1971 from the keep on crinting compilation or the version off of to live for to die(most listened to). Btw what effect did they use in the beginning? I know clive john while in the band used his organ fed into a primitive analog delay in order to get a certain wash but I don't know what they used on this version.

I recall we determined that the info etc on 'Live Adventures' was poor and that it had the wrong Manchester Venue - it should be the Free Trade Hall on May 20 1975. Recorded off the desk.

I saw Man with John Cippolina in Bournemouth on that tour. As I recall the venue was a former bowling alley with quite a low ceiling. The gig was great as I recall it & I remember John Cippolina playing his horizontal slide guitar quite a lot. TBH this was all seen through a psychedelic fog & it was the early hours of the morning before it was safe enough for us to drive back to Southampton. :)

Fair enough. Probably didn't help that there was no liner notes just a cheap cardboard box. Really dig cipollina's playing and quicksilver although I felt he was a little underpowered with man.

I saw them on the opening night of that tour, 4 days previously at the Southend Kursaal. Deke was kind enough to honour my attendance by mentioning that Gig in RW+L  8)

It was a great gig and the tour produced, in my opinion, the best live album in Maximum Darkness.
