Just giving this one a listen.... decent sound quality.

In the inter song chat, Martin very forcefully says they are a progressive band, and that's what they are doing - progressing.

An encouraging, positive attitude, I think.

I thought a few of you might be interested to know what I thought of this show. I know it can be a pain in the rear when people who are fans of another band come swanning in to a forum, laying their trip on people and generally putting themselves about... but I am a Man fan as well, so I'll see if I can sneak under the radar, lol

Anyway, thanx for the seeding, Mike. Had a listen tonight, and, well, thought it was so-so. Enjoyed bits, and other bits would, in a live setting, have prompted me to go off to the bog or to the bar.

Yes, I did note where the guy says they're a progressive band moving forwards and that's why there isn't loads of old stuff. I can fully understand the sentiment, but that sort of comment would definitely make me mutter under my breath, if I were at the show. Fair comment, though. If Man had, all through the 70s, remained rigidly stuck in 1969, we wouldn't have had Spunk Rock.

Broadly speaking, the plodding beat and wah-wah guitar type of Man makes my forearms and back develop goose-bumps. Mad on Her is getting into that territory, for me. Yeah, and the strangely-named Popemobile.

OTOH, the lounge jazz feel, eg the rippling piano on X-ray, doesn't appeal, and nor does melodic and vocal-orientated stuff like the tracks off the new album. I think that says more about me, though... in 1976 I first heard Spunk Rock from the Greasy Truckers album, and I still regard it as one of the finest pieces of rock music ever, outperforming much of what even Hawkwind have offered over the years. To me, it's a spectacular pinnacle of brilliance, really.

Primarily, though, I am a Hawkwind fan, and I've got over 300 bootleg shows in addition to pretty well all their official output. So when it comes to judging a good version from a not-so-good, I can consult a large knowledge base (as Microsoft call it). With Man, I'm still much more of a novice.

Romain, to me, sounded its usual jaunty and rocking self, and I enjoyed it. Many are Called pressed the right buttons as well.

Conflict of Interest was new to me... the instrumentation obviously has echoes of Spunk Rock but I've never heard it before. I see it's on the Endangered Species album... aha, obviously one of the gaps in my knowledge, then.

Anyway, yes, thanx for sticking it on Dime.

Sonic - I'm curious to know what the general feeling amongst Hawkwind fans was when Mr Turner decided to put out his version of Hawkwind.

Meanwhile...I can add to the two musicians who played in Man and Hawkwind....(gasp, build up of suspense, tumbleweed, scenes of desolation....)

Nationsounds - the label that brought you Shake The Nation and raised £1,500 in memory of Micky...

This is a potential minefield, so perhaps it's as well my comments are safely filed away under "Downtown Bluesclub, Hamburg" ;D

In the early 90s I think people were pleased there was more space rock around, but there was confusion as to the product labelling. I can illustrate this with a quote from the "Hawkwind" gig of 28 Jan 1994, New Jersey. Nik Turner said:

Quote
I'd like to apologise to anybody that came up here expecting to see the Hawkwind band that's got Dave Brock in it. Unfortunately he's not here...

But you've got us instead. So I hope you like it. This is the Nik Turner Hawkwind, this is the spiritual Hawkwind.

I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce to you the members of Hawkwind tonight.......

After years of wrangling that caused a schism in a lot of the fanbase, it was finally resolved that Nik's activities would have to be differentiated from Brock's "official" Hawkwind. To me, that's just common sense.

There are currently three camps.

Those who think music matters most and we're all going to be dead one day, so what the heck.
Turner's followers who regard him as the keeper of the flame, and Brock's band as pale parody.
Brock's followers who have long regarded him as the backbone of Hawkwind, and what he says goes.

There are sub-divisions, eg on the question of Turner reviving the Hawklords name for live shows. The "Hawklords" play Frome in a few days, for instance.

I've seen Turner's Spaceritual band twice, and find it... well... adequate, but I wouldn't bother travelling very far to see it.

Ha! Yeah, that's why I thought I'd ask you here where no one else can hear us! Thanks for an interesting reply.

No problem. I wasn't the original seeder - that was "BobFan2". It just happened to still be around on my hard drive, and good old Azureus saw your plight and came to your rescue.

This all sounds awfully familiar ;) Is there a subgroup who don't like the songs with animals/vehicles in the title?  ;) ;) Silver Machine, or Maestro of the Universe, maybe.  ;) ;) ;)

Missed this bit before... how's about an interim report on this matter. Preliminary findings, and all that!

btw, I asked on the HW board, and nothing useful last time I looked.

Rick Martinez. He did a few Man gigs when John Weathers was unavailable and briefly played with HW.
