Subbuteo
« on: October 18, 2009, 10:31:43 PM »
Well, talking about "jarring nostalgia", went to a subbuteo fair this morning. Anybody here who used to have subbuteo, must remember the thrill as a young lad, going into the local toy store and seeing rows and rows of those green boxed teams. It was just like the old days. Came home laden with stuff, teams, smart new goals, the very small size balls (no jokes please), and a couple of goalies with long wires, not those crap plastic things that just go to the edge of the 6 yard box.
And for the Scottish contingent, Celtic and Hib teams, but no Jags, which surprised me as PT teams for some reason, go for a lot of money.
Heaven  :)

In Germany it went under an different name of course but me and some pals occasionally still fall into manic bouts of "Tippkick".

Heaven, just like you say ...

Subbuteo!

Yep, still got mine....agree with Rob that you do need small balls. And the astro pitch was a good idea for so many reasons - Eric, the powerful Nationsounds Cat facility, was less inclined to sit on it for a start. Must have been the rubbery smell.

My team were in a rather attractive colour combination of green and black striped shirts with black shorts. Nice!

Game on, if we ever get the opportunity!  ;D

My brother and I were supposed to be posh, so we were given Subbuteo RUGBY! With a little swivelling man to kick the penalties. As in life, so in Subbuteo, my brother was much better at the penalty kicking than I was - but then I gave up rugby at the earliest oportunity anyway. Who was it said that football is a game for gentlemen played by ruffians, and rugby is a game for ruffians played by gentlemen? Probably a gentleman, if he was using words like "ruffians". Anyway, it was too rough for me and I got hurt a lot!

I got banned from playing it as it was affecting my homework.  I just moved on to have something else affect my homework.

Just had a thought - if the guy who came up with the quote was such a gentleman, he'd have probably called it 'rugger'.

ps most of the guys I know who play rugger are certainly not gentlemen; some can barely stand up straight and have permanent scratches on their knuckles.

Having I said that, I do jolly well enjoy the game when we beat England.

Sospan fach, Hymns and arias, Cwm Rhondda and all that.  You go guys!

Well Nick, my team was yellow/black striped shirts white shorts. Only recently come across the astro pitch thing. I have one of those nylon pitches which I'm sure brought around the end of the gane - they're garbage, but last Xmas, young Woolfey got me an old fashioned baize pitch, like playing on a bowling green. And as for MBB and the homework. My parents thought I was a right little swot, in my bedroom revising.....ohhh no, I was playing sub all the time.

Hmm...could be a clash with the black stripes....I've got a change strip of all red....

Anyway, it was too rough for me and I got hurt a lot!

What, at Subbuteo Rugby?

Subbuteo - Football, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Cricket and Hockey!!!  All crossed the Tel path at some point. A childhood friend was a fanatic but I could never get the hang of it....

By the way the name came from the Latin name for the Hobby (Falco Subbuteo) - a small bird of prey. The inventor used it as he was not allowed to call the game Hobby.

Always thought that was rather clever myself,

Hey Rob

Is it true you could tell the Subutteo Arsenal Team defenders as they were manafactured with one arm raised for Off Side  :)

And for the Southampton team the Matt Le Tissier figure was twice as big - as he had to carry the rest of the team around??  ;D

Team News: I've had a look at my players, one of them has lost his head and the goalkeeper is at a permanent angle of 45 (looks for degree symbol on keyboard, doesn't find it) degrees. Other than that, should be ok - they don't appear to have put on any weight since our last game nearly 25 years ago. Me neither, as it happens.

Not come across subbuteo hockey, Tel.

Nick, wish my old sub hadn't been mysteriously lost in a house move. Teams galore, and the world cup goals which had one blue net, one red net.
Slowly recollecting. My team is now yellow shirts, white shorts so no colour clash, but I may paint the black stripes on myself.

Now, I'm in the mood again, and house move imminent, I'm going to buy a MDF or plywood board to mount the pitch on. Always been a carpet man myself. There's a joke about carpet burns........................

I'm going to buy a MDF or plywood board to mount the pitch on.

I used MDF, larger than pitch size to provide arm support when playing near the edge but with the corners cut to prevent the entire pitch from being bashed by players' frantic movements - and to discourage people from using it as an area to skin up!
