(Yet) more help please........!
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:20:28 AM »
So, fuelled by my euphoria at getting Dime loaded, euphoria which by the way, is still there, I went and purchased some blank DVD discs to record some of the vides onto. Of course, I've never done this before.

Recorded from media player onto the disc, put the disc into DVD player, and nothing happens, just a load of whrring! Put disc into another DVD player, and message appears 'error disc'.

I've earched the internet for clues, and doesn't give the answer.

Discs are Memorex DVD R, and the DVD player, I think is compatible to these discs. Anyone any ideas please?

As ever, thanks..........

1. Writeable DVDs usually come in two types - DVD-R & DVD+R. If your PC DVD drive is reasonably modern, it can doubtless handle both types fine. Your DVD player may also handle both types fine, probably will only handle one type, or possibly may not work with writeable DVDs at all.

2. I'm guessing that the videos you downloaded were .avi files? If so, I'm guessing that WMP just copies these avi files onto a DVD formatted as a data disc. If you have a very modern DVD player then it may handle this & play (mine does) but most won't. You would need other software (e.g. VSO ConvertXToDVD) to turn the .avis into a DVD Video image (i.e. the same format as DVDs that you buy in a shop) & burn this to disk.

Thanks, Mark.

I had converted these files to WMV.

The discs are DVD-R.

Don't want to keep you unless you charge me on a consultancy basis, so just a quicky - should I convert to another type of file? I use AVS Auto Converter 6.

(I will make sure you go to heaven when you jos it  :)  )

Stop Press...just seen in Auto Converter you can convert to DVD, so I'll try that

Just to add to what Mark says...

If your DVD player can play the files without being converted to DVD format, it will probably say something about DIVX compatability in the manual.

Another vote for ConvertXtoDVD... it allows you to drag and drop files to be added to the DVD, and will create a menu from a large list of templates. You'll know if it's converted correctly by checking the DVD contents on a PC - it will contain a folder holding .vob and .ifo files.

Converting avi files to DVD format can be a PC intensive process and may take a few hours, (obviously depending on how powerful your machine is) so is best left going overnight so the s/w has the PC to itself.

Some older DVD players can indeed be fussy about + or - disc formats.

You need to check the manual to see what formats your DVD player supports. I would be surprised if it supported wmv, but I could be wrong.

If you convert to DVD format, then that is most likely to work.

Done It - Success!!!!

DVD's up and running. Just watched Man at RAH and....wait for it......bit longer.......Blackmore's Night. Yes, Blackmore's Night. It was a post on the old Manboard where somebody put a link to Ritchie B with words to the effect of 'you wouldn't believe it' only worse, I recall.

Well, I love RB, and I love all the minstrelly, celtic, away with the faeries stuff......plus Candice is pretty damn good looking.

Again, thanks Mark and thanks Tim.
