John

Wasn't the two-sided 'Bananas' 7" regarded as an EP?

The wikipedia explanation: An extended play (EP) is a vinyl record, Compact Disc, or music download which contains more music than a single, but is too short to qualify as an LP.
To me Bananas was a single over two sides, although long enough to be considered an extended play.
I'd always been led to believe an EP was a record with four or more tracks. Its all subjective I suppose.

Actually the rules are/were quite strict. EP's were a quite unique format and always considered to be a release in their own right up until 1969 when the powers that be banned them from any official chart release, along with LP's. As a result the last official EP to hit the singles charts (up till then) was Simon & Garfunkels Mrs Robinson EP which was climbing quite happily and had reached #9 when it suddenly vanished from chart listings, despite still selling. LP's had also qualified for the singles chart and according to some listings The Beatles "White Album" was the last LP to actually enter the singles chart.

However to get around this, record companies introduced the "maxi" single which was effectively an EP in all but name. The first of these was Mungo Jerry's In The Summertime and from 1970 to 1975 there was a large amount of these "maxi" singles. Hendrix Voodoo Chile, most of the early T.Rex releases, a lot of the early 1970's re-releases by artists Elvis, Neil Sedaka and even Glen Miller release "maxi" singles which were EP's in everything but name.

In 1975 the powers that be relented and the EP came in from the cold when Status Quo's "Quo Live EP" became the first official EP to chart in 6 years. The EP was back and there was a large number that charted in the following years - Queen, ELO, The Faces, Nazereth, Joe Walsh are a few from the top of my head.

I think the rule was that the EP had to have a seperate name (they became really original - Queen's First EP) and had to be between a certain time in length. It was usually the length of 4 tracks but there were a few that had less tracks, such as Barclay James Harvest Live EP but were longer than the normal single. Some even had a larger number of tracks - Bow Wow Wow charted with Your Cassette Pet EP which had 8 tracks.

What actually happened was that the EP would chart but became commonly known by the lead track. For instance when Motorhead and Girls School charted in 1981 and reached Number 5 with the cover of Please Don't Touch it was in fact the lead track from an EP called The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre EP.

And basically the EP still exists within these boundaries. The most recent EP to chart to my knowledge was by a band called Jamie T with The Chaka Demus EP - made no 23 last year. The waters have become muddied with CD Singles and multi tracks, effectively there can be a crossover but the official EP release will still be "The Whatever EP" by The Whoever

I've still got a double-sded flexi with Rare Bird (Diamonds) on one side and BJH (Negative Earth) on the other. Came with Sounds I think; played it to death, my first intro to both bands. Also a countertop flexi freebie for Wishbone Ash (New England), 30 second bursts of selected tracks. Didn't pursuade me to buy the LP.Somewhere I have one or two Private Eye flexi's - comedy, not music, obviously. I seem to remember the NME doing solid vinyl 7" cover freebies for a while, post punk.

Most cherished vinyl freebies are the Steve Hillage 45 given away at the Motivation Radio gigs - Leylines to Glassdom, not the Green version, b/w something by Philip Glass that I never played; and the 7" sampler given away at the Band Called O/Sassafras/Randy Pie package tour - respectively Ain't Nothin' I Wouldn't Do/Wheelin' and Dealin'/I Am the Joker. Now THAT was an EP ... ! Fantastic gig too, Glasgow City Hall, just after O had supported Man I think. Randy Pie were awesome (not often I use that word).

Some flexi discs, a square one for people with square record players, a metal one, so not only do you have to contend with wear and tear but also rust and.....I stand to be corrected the only Man related flexi disc by Pegasus, contains part of a track by Big Sleep.
Note the metal flexi disc has a place on it to put a coin in case the record slips.
All have three or four tracks as a way of advertising future releases.

Came across a few oddities on the shelves, a double sided 9-track solid 7" promo from A&M from my time working in a record shop yonks ago featuring Albert Lee on one side and Bryn Howarth on the other to promote the releases of 'Hiding' and 'Keep The Ball Rolling' in May 1979. Ref AL/BH1, fairly obviously.

Other record shop goodies were the one sided promo LPs, 1976 era - the Tom Petty one is great, audience of about 20 - I did have the Southside Johnny one until its unbridled cheeriness started to get on my wick - wasn't there a Graham Parker one from some small place near Marble Arch? Think I've only got it on tape.

Given away on the SAHB tour 1976 was a flexi single of support act Pat Traver's rather chunky 'Makes No Difference', predating his first LP.

Pride of place goes to Dark Star Magazine's 1978 one-sided flexi featuring Spirit playing 'Midnight Train' and 'Potatoland Theme', neither of which were on either of the two versions of 'Potatoland'.

I've still got a double-sded flexi with Rare Bird (Diamonds) on one side and BJH (Negative Earth) on the other. Came with Sounds I think...

Hmmm....ponder....a Polydor job...1974ish?  I've got 'Sounds Freebie No.2' featuring a track by Gillan and a track by The Professionals (both Virgin acts at the time) - but this was from 1981 and is single sided. So I'm guessing the Rare Bird/BJH flexi wasn't from Sounds (although it probably was!)

Hi chaps.

Man have appeared on a flexi disk.  They are featured on an eastern european flexi disk/ plastic postcard; which is a very pleasant poo brown colour.  I've been unable to play it so can't verify the track but it was sold as featuring the song Love Your Life.  The title of the track is in some eastern european language so thats no help.  The other track on the flexi is by someone called Irena.

If anyone has any interest in eatern european languages can they translate "KOCHAJ MNIE"

Hi Andy, Any chance of an image, never heard of this ever....looks like another one for Martin Mycock and Mannerisms 3.
Put flexi discs into ebay, hundreds of items came up and I thought they were rare.
Anyone with an interest in the Pink Fairies and Twink, someone's selling a single together with the flexi disc I put up earlier...
