Man at Leamington Spa, 2 May 2010
« on: May 03, 2010, 10:44:05 AM »
I stayed sober for Hawkwind @ Cardiff a couple of days ago, and planned to get slaughtered at the Leamington Spa "psychedelic sunday". Mission accomplished... but it does mean my recollections of the Man set are a bit wonky.

With only 45 mins allocated, they didn't have time to do much stuff off the new album and it would've probably been unwise anyway, judging from what I've read about it. This was an opportunity for Martin Ace to connect or reconnect his incarnation of the Man band with the current Hawkwind crowd, and so "Many are Called" and "Spunk Rock" got the nod.

I videoed over 8 mins of Spunk Rock & I'll post it on youtube when I get home. I'm just having another wake-up coffee in my hotel room at present.

I only seen Man once before, approx 1994, and I was royally blitzed, so I can't really make like I'm an expert... but they sounded pretty Man-ish and went down well with the Hawkwind crowd.

EDIT: my review of Hawkwind in Cardiff!

Just had breakfast... mainly coffees and cigarettes. Also, I looked in the mirror. Bad move. Bloodshot eyes, heavy-lidded, bags under eyes. ONOZ.

Just been looking thru the video clips and I see I forgot to say they did "Cmon" as well. The sound's a bit rough and the video quality is low-res cellphone, but I'll still post them on youtube later. I might even come back here and post the links, you never know!

Off to get me train now.

Q. Whats the difference between a Man gig and a Hawkwind gig?

A. There's and audience AND a band at the Hawkwind gig..

Okey-doke, will do.

Back at home in North Devon now, and transferring all the Leamington Spa AVI files from my laptop to my main computer. The fan's whining away like a chainsaw, so I'll have to delay tweaking and editing in Movie Magix... also, as my username hints, I'm primarily a Hawkwind fan, so I'll be doing a few of those clips first.

Rough guess, I think I'll start the "Spunk Rock" upload, at around 8pm. Oooo-er.

PS I do like to tidy my video clips a bit, with fade-in and fade-out, and maybe a caption too. That's why I'll be using Magix. 6pm now, and going to start the Hawkwind processing.

Sonic,

Good effort, pretty good recording in the circumstances.
Sadly it confirms my feelings towards the current lineup.
I shan't say anymore..  :'(

Thanks Mr Hawk.
Nationsounds - the label that brought you Shake The Nation and raised £1,500 in memory of Micky...

Yes, I think Phil is the highlight of the current line-up. It was so good to see him playing again last year in Fife, teh first time I've had the pleasure since the Up For The Day tour in 1973! For my money, he is some compnesation for not having Micky around any more, as a lot of my favourite moments involve the interaction between the two of them.

Strange. When I watched it, thought the band were playing Spunk Rock, while Phil was playing something else..
Did improve for his solo towards the end..

The song remains the same but this is not Man.I'm very sorry to say that after 40 years as a devoted Manfan the time has come to let go and remember them as the incredibly innovative band that they were (particularly in the 70's)....rather that than witness a continuing descent  into cabaret and pastiche.Nothing lasts for ever.

Nope, it was Led Zeppelin !! (had to get in there before Nick Nation)

Although the fanbase is dissintegrating, hang in there.. There could always be some gems from the past lurking somewhere. If we lose you, you may miss out on something.. (I can live in hope!). While I don't agree with what the current lineup is doing, things may change for the better. They have changed (frequently) in the past..

George and Bob have a good project going..

.....While I don't agree with what the current lineup is doing, things may change for the better. They have changed (frequently) in the past..

Some of the recent talk about Man has, uncomfortably, reminded me of Hawkwind in the past.  There was a period where I went off tHawkwind totally - the 1986-1988 metal phase (Chronicles, etc) and also some of these comments I've seen about Martin Ace uncomfortably remind me of the Nik Turner vs Hawkwind shennanighans of years gone by, where fans vs fans caused a few ripples on the Hawkwind forum.

Anyway, all I wanted to say was: things may indeed change. Maybe for the better, and maybe for the worse. Prepare.

On a possibly-related note, I hope to post the gig intro, "cmon" and "many" tomorrow.
