For me, the first post contained an error in that latest member should have had quote marks around the phrase.
Secondly in post two, using the same word twice in a sentence ("surely") is not a grammatical error and, indeed, if one were to check the Cabinet Office guidelines for report writing , using the same word twice in one sentence is not dissaproved of. The older generation may find it distasteful (include me in) but language moves on, develops and thrives on change.
Post two again, would 'I would love to be more of a pedant' be more appropriate? - why apologise? Use active speech rather than passive.
Post two yet again ( no agenda here, John), but you say 'obviously not'. There has been much debate about the use of 'obviously' or its derivatives and their validity and whether 'clearly' is a more precise word in the circumstances.
And another, how can one be "more" of a pedant? You either are or you aren't
Spell check aside, I would expect challenges on the use of "its derivatives" regarding the absence / presence of an apostrophe. Also whether "in the circumstances" should be "under the circumstances"
There's another debate to be had as to about whether '////' should be used or "////".
I am considering changing my alter ego from MBB to Sad twat.
