Eileen and me were down in South Wales last week for a short break - we were staying in Laugharne with some pretty spectacular views out onto Carmathen Bay. I took the opportunity to check out if and when George's band were playing and we were in luck as they were playing in Llanelli on the Saturday and Porthcawl on Sunday.
We arrived in our accomodation at the back of seven and agreed to head out to Llanelli no later than eight o'clock. We got there in time to see the gear being packed in the back of the van as the band were playing from six until eight. D'oh!! Serves me right for not checking in advance. I did manage to check that they were starting at 1630 the next day.
Anyway, we got to Porthcawl in good time and settled down for a thoroughly enjoyable show. All covers but all approached with a funky muscularity that had me enjoying some songs that I've previously never conisdered giving the time of day to. Great rhythm section, great vocalist and the guitarist wasn't too bad either!! George got to let rip more than a little during Whole Lotta Love which even had my wife perched on her seat to try to see how he was getting the sounds he was!!
There was a very healthy crowd including a bunch of punters who'd arrived on a mini-bus and the place was jumping. In retrospect, the timing is excellent as it filled the pub at a time of day when it would probably otherwise be barren of humanity.
If you're in the vicinity and they are playing, I'd recommend you taking the time to catch the Cover Sluts. A diversion from more serious matters perhaps, but a heartily enjoyable one nevertheless.
And why is it that the further west you go in Wales, that vowels becomes more scarce?
