It wasn't that long ago that the England team had started to become quite good....long standing issues such as good players underperforming for their country, or the question of certain players being able to play together seemed to have been addressed.

Then sometime towards the end of the qualifying rounds warning signs appeared, it was as if some unseen force had decided to jinx them....injuries, the issues surrounding the Captaincy, contradictory behaviour on the manager's part - claiming players had to be playing regularly for their club to be considered, but then picking players who weren't (Heskey) or who were not fully fit and clearly a liability (Milner, King) or completely off form (Rooney), fiddling with the formations during the penultimate friendly....perhaps it's a case that the team just peaked too soon.

I get the feeling that the all important bond between manager and player has gone horribly wrong somewhere.

I also reckon that I now have the key of Bb (con fuzzines) indelibly stamped on my auditory wotsit.

I think I've sussed it - it's a worm hole. Not only has Nicolas Anelka returned to his sulky ways, my central heating's come back on.

This made me laugh in the last Private Eye:

Odds on John Terry scoring

With another WAG  2-1
With a South African local  3-1
With a selection of WAGs, Africans and Ashley Cole  4-1
Off his dad  5-1

France. Turns out that slightly unpopular manager Domenech is into astrology and distrusts Scorpios.

Odds on John Terry scoring...

How about odds on Heskey?

Gets injured: 2-1
Injures a colleague: 3 -1
Gets the best out of Rooney: 4 - 1
Misses a sitter: 5 - 1
Scores a goal: Odds incalculable

Phew...a win's a win. Also means that after 3hrs of football, Robert Green is now our joint leading scorer.

This will hopefully even amuse the non soccer fans amongst y'all - the Norwegian commentator sums up Norway's victory over England in 1981 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZTP8-8wIs

Lord Beaverbrook?!

Here in Wales, we don't worry about penalty shoot outs...

I suppose evryone is aware that we were in the World Cup in 1958 and got knocked out by Brazil.

And you lot from over the border sing about 40 years of hurt.  Jeez for us there is no pain we are receding.

Which is (almost) a line from a song by...

Talking of receding, a couple of the SA goalmouths are looking grim.

I actually moved to Norway as a political refugee from the UK in September 1981, just before this match. You can imagine what it was like - the result is still amost 30-years on frequently repeated and that commentary is also legendary and often shown here. In fact, you should know that it is actually Norway that just won through to the next round (based on that result...)

Perhaps we could come up with a version for Sunday. I can only think of two famous Germans though - Adolf and Eva.
